Como

Staying at Hotel Orso Bruno. I assume we will kind of get on the ferry and go from there, but if we arrive in Como/hotel at like 2, what can we reasonably assume we will be doing? Is that good to go to Bellagio/Varenna and see the gardens and such or should we stick around Como and attack it the next day. We will be there for two days and two nights basically.

Hey Jason,

If you are not too tired upon your arrival in Como at 2 then head to Bellagio / Varenna and see the gardens . You will only be there for 2 days so might as well maximize your time there.

If you have the time, take the funicular near the ferry terminal in Como up to Brunate for a spectacular view of the city, the lake and the alps.

If you can cancel your reservation and book another one lake it would be better and easier. Look at Bellagio, Mennagio, Varenna and Cadenabbia. Lots of ferry choices mid-lake. and the scenery is so much prettier there too.
There is fast ferry service from Como to Bellagio but then you would be inside and not see the views. The regular ferry service would cut into your time in trying to get mid-lake. If you go mid lake from Como on arrival day, you will not have anywhere near enough time to see it all. Do it the next day if you can't change hotels. We have spent a lot of time on Lake Como, traveled it end to end many times and would hate to think that you would miss so much by going mid lake on the mid afternoon of our arrival day. There are four major gardens to tour, making for a full day.

Yes, the ferry dock is virtually at your front door. Now the practical matter of how to get there. You mentioned on your other thread you were coming by train from Bologna.
1. You could go to Milano Centrale, then change to a train to Como S. Giovanni. Then you could take the C10 bus to Urio, but the bus stop is up on the side of the hill, so you have a bit of a trek downhill to your hotel. Or you could take a taxi from S. Giovanni station.
2. Another alternative is to take a train from Milano Centrale to Nord Boviso station then change to the Trenord train to Como Nord Lago, then walk to the ferry dock and get a boat to your front door.

But you will have long ferry rides to be mid lake to see what you want.

I may have missed something, but I’m curious why you’re staying in Como? Why not Bellagio or Varenna?

No real reason. We originally were in Brunate but wound up changing for a few reasons. I'm open to suggestions still

Then I would definitely recommend staying in Varenna or Bellagio. You can take the train directly to Varenna. That’s the part of the lake that you want to spend time in. 😊

I strongly agree. Stay in the mid lake area. It is only an hour train ride from Milano Centrale train station in Milan. We stayed in Varenna, and it was heavenly. There is so much to see in this area. We particularly loved Villa Balbianello. The village of Como is a long ferry ride away. Look at the hotel recommendations in Ricks book. We stayed at Hotel du Lac, right on the shore, and would highly recommend it.
