Rick,

Do you mean the city of Como or around Como lake?

We stayed in Varenna ( a mid- lakeside village) which is an easy train ride from Milan's central station.

We visited Como on a day trip but did not stay there, however we had the best pizza on our trip there.

Let me know if you want the name of the pizzeria.

A recommendation would be to pick one of the small hotels in one of the 3 villages around the upper half of the lake: Varenna, Menaggio (across the lake from Varenna), or Bellagio (not the Vegas one).
Rick's recommendations of specific properties are in his Italy book.

Some travelers here feel Varenna is the best Lake Como home-base. A room with a view of the lake is a plus.

Rick,

This restaurant/pizzeria is in the city/town of Como.

It's called "Locanda Barbarossa". We sat very close to the wood burning pizza oven & all the pizza's coming out looked & smelled heavenly!

We also spotted a platter with a baked/roasted whole fish surrounded by vegetables that looked amazing.

We were there for lunch & most of the patrons were Italian and eating pizza, so we ordered pizza!

Here is the website: http://www.locandabarbarossa.it/en/pagina/home.html

Early April is kind of on the front edge of Italy's good weather for outdoor places.
Of course, nobody knows what the weather will be there then.
And you may already be committed to early April in Lake Como. With some luck it should work for you, I only mention this because Lake Como is an outdoor scenery place, without a lot of indoor options, if the weather isn't cooperating.
If you had the flexibility (for example, if after Lake Como you were going to be in other locations in Italy, such as Rome, Venice or Florence, places that have more indoor options), you might want to think about switching the Lake Como portion of your Italy sojourn to the end of the trip.
