Combined Rome & Almafi Coast Vacation

Hello,
I'm planning a trip to Italy next year in September. I'd like to visit Rome for 6 nights and the Amalfi coast for 3 nights. Is 3 nights for the Amalfi coast too short or too long? This is my first visit to Italy and I want to maximize my time. Your input will be appreciated.

It could be too short for you because you may not find it over rated. Furthermore if you don't go there by helicopter it is going to take about half a day of your 3 just to get there from Rome. I went there for 3 nights last May. It turns out that it is all a blur; here on the forum you should say where exactly in Amalfi Coast you want to go to in 2 1/2 days to get suggestions to maximize your time.

I imagine that area would be better october - april to visit less crowds taking selfies showing up in you own photos and easier to get around

Bus to Sorrento spend 4 nights. While technically not on the AC, it will give you the best transportation for the area. Pompeii, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast.

Ferry, bus and Circumvesuvian schedules here.

Connections to Rome. Circumvesuvian to Naples, train (Trenitalia. Com) Napoli Centrale to Rome Termini (5 nights).

Thanks for the info. It seems that flying to Naples and going to Sorrento is the way I should go. I'll add a 4th night to AC, but still keep 6 nights for Rome, and leave from the Eternal City. I'm into History, Food and Wine and must see Herculaneum, Forum, AC, Sistine Chapel, and eat as a local.

This was our trip in 2015, and it was fantastic. We went in May, and it was hot in Rome! Make sure your lodging has A.C.. When you are on the Amalfi, don't miss Ravello. It is above the village of Amalfi and can be reached by a local bus. When you are looking for a great meal in Sorrento, go to Delfinos on Marina Grande. Show your RS book and get a free limoncello! You can't go to Italy and not try limoncello!

Only fly to Naples if Sorrento is your first stop. From Rome, the Frecciarossa rail service/gritty Circumvesuviana Naples-Sorrento is faster and cheap 3 months in advance. However, it is usually risky to leave Sorrento (and worse, the Amalfi Coast) and fly home the same day. Use the search box for this board to read many posts.

One more thought: while Sorrento is a great base, Positano is enthralling. If you can find lodgings you like there, you'll remember it more vividly than staying in Sorrento. And you can readily take ferries from Positano to Capri and Amalfi as well.

Enjoy!
