Is the Colusseum/Roman Forum area a safe area of Rome to stay in? I will be traveling with two other women, and we would like to stay in an area where we feel safe to walk at night.
Yes, you'll probably be safer than walking at night in Des Moines or Chicago (not that there's anything wrong with Des Moines, a fine city, I just mean many European cities are safer in terms of violent crime than many comparable-sized American cities).
We stayed just oursde of the colloseum area (by Manzoni Metro station... orea was a little more sketchy that the colloseum area. we felt safe but werent ourt too late. I think Rome seems a litte more sketchy than it really is if that makes sence.
Yes for sure. We stayed about a 10 minute walk from the Colusseum (hotel giardino by the way. Perfect location, reasonable prices). Anyway, the streets in Rome are always full of folks out strolling around, and police are also very visible. Rome felt much safer that most North American cities.
A great area! Stay there and have fun!
We walked late in the evening into the Forum and Pantine Hill and felt perfectly safe.
Walked along the outside of the Colosseum in the dark without any problems. Was in more danger from the rain than anything else! (This was in December)
We will be staying near the Colosseum, off of Via Cavour this November. I don't anticipate any problems. As another poster noted, Rome has a bit of a 'gritty' feel to it, but I never felt unsafe.
My two sisters, our cousin and another friend (all girls in our early 20's) stayed together in an apartment in Rome that was about a ten to fifteen minute walk from the Colusseum and we never felt unsafe. Just be sure to stay together and use common sense just as you would in America and you'll be fine!
