Colosseum Underground Tour Sold Out?

Hi There!

We were looking at booking the underground tour of the Colosseum on the 25th of June (5 people) through the official site but am unable to book (all the dropdowns show 0!). I am wondering if it is possible that the dates are already sold out or am I missing something? I tried some other dates and times but nothing seems to be available!

This was one of the items on my bucket lists so I am pretty bummed - by the looks of it the pvt tours are way too costly!

Any help appreciated :)

Hi -
Yes, I'm afraid it is entirely possible - probable, in fact - that tours reserved through the Coopculture site are filled for that date. These tours are wildly popular and book up for high season almost as soon as they become available.

Underground tours for June have been sold out for two months. You won't be able to book through the official site for a day time tour. If you are there on a Monday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday night you could book the night tour. It's 20 euros and doesn't include entry to the forum or palatine hill but it will allow you to tour the underground areas of the colosseum.

If you don't want to book a private tour, you could try going your 1st/2nd day in Rome, as early as possible, and see if you can book one at the ticket office. When we were there in early Sept, 2014, I was prepared not to do the underground. I didn't book ahead. My mom and I walked over as soon as they opened (our apt was only a few hundred meters away, so we didn't have to rely on the metro - a two min walk and we were there) and were able to get a slot for that afternoon, just after lunch. Perhaps they had cancellations. Perhaps they leave some spots for people who just show up. I don't know. Perhaps we were just really lucky, but I'm sure we had a few options for that day.

If you have more than a few days in Rome, I'd suggest going early (to avoid waiting in line for an hour + only to be disappointed) and see if they have anything avail over the next few days. Hope you have some luck. I tried asking at the Palantine hill ticket booth first, but were directed to go to the Col ticket booth.

I didn't know they booked up so fast. Thank you for this information. Our dates do not open up until 6/19 and I guess I will get up in the middle of the night to get the reservation.

It's very different now from 2014. These tours sell out within weeks of being offered and none are held back for walk-ins. The tours for April, May and June went on sale on March 13th and by April 5th they were sold out for the entire 3 month period. The next set is due to be released on June 19th and will most likely sell out within 2 weeks. If you cannot get on a daytime tour for your dates check out the night time tours. There is still limited availability for these tours.

The English tours book out very quickly (like, within 1 day!), so I took Donna's advice (I'm sure it was you, Donna) and took the Spanish tour instead just to gain access. I'll use Rick's audio tour and nod and smile at the appropriate times.

I have also heard of others who have chosen a non-English tour who have gone to the ticket counter and been put onto the English tour anyway.

Donna - Are the tours that go on sale on June 19th just through September? Would October go on sale in September?

thanks.

Larlock, yes, tours for October through the end of the year will go on sale in mid September.

c0utta, I've not heard of people being switched on their tours. Capacity is very limited due to the small size of the underground. I can only see a switch being made if someone didn't show up for their English tour.
