I have heard that you can now go to the lower levels of the Colosseum. Does it take a special ticket, or do I just prepay online for a standard ticket?
It is separate tour that right now is the "hot ticket" so better to book ahead. Here is the info from a friend of mine who has done it... I was able to book a tour of the Coliseum which includes the underground and third tier, which have previously not been open to the public. If anyone is interested, here is the information. It's a 1 ½ hour tour in English (after the tour you can wander the public areas of Coliseum, Forum and Palatine Hill). Cost was 21.5E/pp, less if you have a Roma Card. You have to call the Piercci Cultural Center to make a reservation. Call 011 39 06 39967700. There's a long recording in Italian, but after the Italian they repeat in English. If you want to avoid listening, just press 0 and then 3. Then you get a message telling you to hold for the next operator. I called at 6 this morning and got through. Had to wait in que for a minute or so. The representative spoke in Italian but when I asked if she spoke English, she did. There were several time options available the day we wanted. I reserved, gave her a credit card, she gave me a confirmation number. When you go, you bypass the lines and go to the reservation desk and give them your confirmation number.
Thank you so much, I'll let you know if I can make it work for me.
The representative will also take your email address. if you haven't received a confirmation in a day or so, email them. I did that and received my confirmation the same day. I was also advised to show up at least twenty minutes prior to my reservation time.
We did the underground/upper levels tour in July. We used the method described above to book our tickets and that IS the price we paid. It's well worth the extra 7-8 euros above the standard ticket price!
I too called direct at about 5am our time and gave them my credit card info. The Roma Pass is seperate. we got the tour at 9:40 am

We did the underground tour at night (available on Saturday nights) and that was cool. We really enjoyed it, thought it was worth the extra cost.
