Colosseum underground tickets sold out already for date needed

Hello,
my husband and I got up & tried to get Colosseum Underground tickets when it opened up for July this morning 2 am our time(USA). Since you are only allowed to get 6 tickets at a time he was getting 3 and I was getting 4 for our group of 7. Long story short, there was to much on-line traffic and we were not able to get any tickets before it filled up 15 minutes into opening at 9 am Rome time.
We have reserved the entrance tickets for the 4 adults( kids with us are 12-14).

I need 7 tickets for July 5th before 11am for the Colosseum underground. I welcome suggestions if there are options available . I know private tour groups will have them at many time the basic price but is that the only option?
TIA

You can try a broker who will charge a markup but not nearly the cost of a tour. I use Select Italy frequently.

I wouldn't pay 100's of euros for this tour. It's a good tour but it's not worth that cost. You can see the underground from the regular areas of the colosseum, you're just looking down into them instead of straight out into them. The underground area is small, you're not allowed to wander around it or explore the area. You're in a confined area under the arena floor. You only stay down there about 10 minutes. The rest of the tour is of the main areas and the third tier.

Just tell the kids that you tried but couldn't get tickets. I would take them to the Capucchin Crypt or the catacombs instead.

I'm with Donna on this: seeing the main part of the arena on a general-entry ticket (which also includes the Palatine and Forum) should be plenty good enough. You'll be able to see the underground area from above. See if there are enough slots still open for one of the € 5.00 tours: must be booked via phone: (+39 06 399 67 700) and you must purchase general-entry tickets in addition to the tour. ALL of that can be done via the same phone call.

Smita - I feel your pain and appreciate you starting this topic. I was up also at 3 AM trying to get tickets and was also unsuccessful.

It sounds as though that the Underground part is not really necessary.

I'm currently looking at doing a tour with a guide/group and am now questioning whether that is worth the money. Would love to hear more thoughts about this. Thinking maybe of just getting the general admission tickets and then listening to Rick's audio tour.

Has anyone done that?

If you google pictures of the colosseum you'll be able to see the inside of it. Most will show the arena floor. It's under that small section that the underground tour goes. From all other areas of the colosseum you can look down into the underground sections. You can actually get a better view from above as you can move around it and look in at various points. Once underground you are in a small section and can only look out into the underground. You are not free to roam around and explore.

I was online too at 2 a.m. - crazy, had no luck at all. So the 5 euro tickets mentioned above -is that through Coop Culture? What are the options for just doing a walk through on all our own? I saw in Rick Steve's book that you can buy tickets in advance at ticketclick.it - but I don't seem them on the site.

Pam, if it's the underground you're asking about, you can't access it at all without a tour. The 5-euro tours are for the main part of the arena above the underground, and are available to book only by phone: I covered that in a post above. However, you are not required to have a tour for that part and are perfectly free to visit it on your own. Some people do it with guidebooks, others with audioguides rented at the site, and others with Rick's free audioguide downloaded to their own devices.

Buy your general-entry tickets on the coopculture website: that's the OFFICIAL vendor. They are not day or time specific so you can go any day/time at all that the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine: (1 ticket covers all 3) are open before the end of this year.

Adult tickets are € 12.00 +€ 2.00 reservation fee (€ 14.00).

Editing to add: I see you are traveling with two children ages 10 and 13? They will be "free" but you'll need to collect tickets for them at the special events counter. Choose the "pickup@ticket office" option when you do the checkout for your adult tickets. Bring your printed-out vouchers - along with your children's passports for proof of age - to the special events counter to collect all of your tickets: ask a guard if you are uncertain where to go.

You will all pass through a security checkpoint before proceeding to that counter.

(edited out/ corrected some info)

What a crazy process! I was up hitting refresh (west coast time, I feel for you east coasters) and once it hit midnight for me the site just slooooooowed down. I was able to get tickets, but the drag on the site did not allow me to get tickets for the same tour. I ended up getting 2 at 9:40 and 2 at 10:40. At that point I did not care and was happy to get tickets. What a mess.

It's actually an easy process but with thousands of people using multiple devices with multiple pages up on each it makes it very slow. Again, this is a good tour but for me, it's not worth getting up at 3 am just to sit for an hour trying to get on it. Especially when you can see everything from above.

Thank you for all the input and advice. From everyone's input it does not seem that that will miss viewing it as it can been seen from the the general area. For us, the underground tickets, or lack thereof, are a done deal at this point. Onwards -any tips for getting in with minimum fuss? We are travelling in the afternoon, so would like to get in early.
