Colosseum & Underground in July

I have a couple of questions regarding the Colosseum tickets and tours.

  1. Is the underground tour worth the time and expense?
  2. I will be traveling with my kids who are 15 and 17 yrs old. The coop culture website allows you to purchase tickets for adults at full admission but EU and Non EU under 18 are only 2,00 Euros. Does this give the same access as the full ticket?
  3. I seem to be able to buy tickets on line for the colosseum but not the underground and upper levels after 30/6/2014. Can I assume that July dates will soon be available as we are not in Rome until mid July.
  4. Is the underground and upper ring access available only as a tour? I believe this to be so according to Rick's book.
  5. If the tour is available for July, does it include the entrance tickets? Or should I go ahead and purchase the entrance tickets now and book the tour when it becomes available?

Thank you in advance for your help in understanding my dilemma.

1) only you can decide this. Thousands of people have taken the tour and really enjoyed it but it's a matter of personal opinion.

2)Yes. the entry tickets for anyone under 18 are free but if you buy them online you pay the 2 euros reservation fee. It will allow them the same access to the main parts of the colosseum. It will not book them on the underground tour. You can only book the underground tour by calling and there are no discounts for kids. The tour is 9 euros for everyone on top of admission costs.

3) They should release July dates within the next few weeks. I would keep checking the website.

4) Yes, you can only visit these areas while on a tour.

5) Yes and no. You can book tickets now and the tour later or you can wait and book both at the same time. The cost is the same no matter how you do it.

Yes you do have to call, but it wasn't too hard.

I think they have changed it to not charge kids for tour either - someone else said that happened to them, which I thought was a mistake as was pointed out on here as well. But then mine were not charged either, but it clearly marks both the tour and the regular admission for both of my kids, but at no cost (or like 2E or something...). Just be sure to check your confirmation and make sure it is listed on there.
