Colosseum Underground + Belvedere Tickets

Hello, all,
School is out for the summer and I finally have time to dive into planning my family's trip to Italy this summer. One of the things we would really like to do is the combined Colosseum Underground + Belvedere tour through CoopCulture. There are 9 of us and the way I understand it, when I wake up at all hours (2am local time) to try to book the tour, I can only book 6 on any one given tour.

Does anyone have experience with this? I'd like to get the 9 of us on the same tour, so need to know how they are determining who the "client" is that can book 6 on a tour. Is it by email address?

We are actually three different groups (my parents, my cousins' family, and myself with boyfriend), so could have two people doing it, and thus be two different clients, but am trying to figure out the easiest way to ensure we are on the same tour -- seeing the same times, etc. Thank you!

Kristin, you may only book the maximum of 6 in the same group for the same time slot. To do more you'd have to do a another transaction and use a different email address. Or, one of your other family members would have to try to land the booking for the remaining 3 with both of you on the site and communicating on the phone about which slots to grab.

To be honest, I think your chances of getting all 9 on one of these tours at the same time are very, very slim. Slots go SO fast that by the time you got around to transaction #2 or lost time figuring out with the family member if there's a slot which could accommodate everyone, they're likely to be gone.

A group your size might benefit from a private tour with an independent guide if you want everyone to do it together. Or, one of any number of group tours offered by independent companies if you can find one with openings for 9, although I'm personally unaware of any which do both the Belvedere and Underground. Anyway, by the time you added the per-person cost up for one of those, a private guide would likely cost you less.

Kristen,

I tried to book the Colosseum Underground tour through CoopCulture for me and my 4 friends last May. I went online at the designated time (2:00 a.m.) but was unable to get on the site. It's virtually impossible. The tickets go in a matter of a couple of minutes. I WAS able to book a tour through CoopCulture for the Colosseum Underground night tour. It was nice because it was cooler out and was very spooky in a fun way. Good luck!

That's a good option, Kristin, as you're allowed to purchase for all 9 in one transaction (as long as there are still 9 slots open, and you can visit on a Monday, Tuesday, Wed, or Sundays after June 10). You won't see the Belvedere, and these tickets do not include the Forum and Palatine but if you aren't interested in those then it doesn't matter. Tickets go quickly for this too so it's unsure what's still open for your dates.

Thank you all! I will definitely keep looking around. Getting on these tours was not as hard 5 years ago!
Are private guides permitted on both levels? If so, can anyone recommend one?
Thanks!

Sorry, no idea about either but hopefully someone else knows/can recommend.

Kristen, yes some private companies and guides are allowed to do these tours. Others buy these tours and pass you off to official guides, so you are paying 80-100 euros for an official tour!

As for the number of tickets you can buy, yes, they are very strict about this and will cancel all transactions that break this rule. If you can have someone else online with you you may be able to book the same tour. Use two different email addresses and two different credit cards. This is the same for the daytime and the night time tours.

Well, it looks like the coopculture night tours in English are virtually sold out for the summer: only single tickets left for random days (one still has 3) so 'fraid it's on to Plan B.

You can book up to 25 of these tours in a single transaction (limit of 2 slots per night) so it could have worked for 9 if you could have snagged them right away when tickets became available. Yep, this thing is one very hot item with the tourists!

Thank you all for your help! Here I thought I was doing well by putting it on my calendar to check for when you could actually book the tour...Worked for everything else so far! We even got on the Scavi Tour. Didn't expect the Colosseum to be what is stressing me out! BUT, I did look into some other options and sent those along to my family.

At this point, our plan is still to have my boyfriend and I up, on two different computers, trying to book something on the 11th. He has a different last name, email, credit card, etc. We will keep our fingers crossed.

That said, is the Underground+Arena tour as competitive? This is the one I went on 5 years ago and I remember having to call to get the reservation, but not that it was quite this competitive/popular. There are 2 in our group that likely would opt out of the Belvedere due to knee problems, so we are considering trying to book our group on two different tours around the same time frame. Or, just trying for the Underground tour rather than the combined ticket. This is what we'd have to do with the private companies with openings available, anyhow.

Thank you, again, for your help and insight!

The underground tour includes the arena floor (with the exception of a few days when it's closed to the public). The belvedere and combined tours also include the arena floor.

Good luck on Monday. Let us know how it goes.
