We are taking the Venice/Florence/Rome tour. Itinerary says we tour the Colosseum. How much (approx.) time do we spend there?Hubby wants to book a separate tour for our free time. Is that really necessary?

On the "Heart of Italy" we spent about 2 hours between the Colosseum and the Forum. I'm not sure if it would be different for your tour. I felt satisfied with the amount of time we spent.

Sylvia, with so little time that tour spends in Rome & so many things to see, I wouldn't spend either of your two free afternoons returning to the Colosseum. If your husband's interest is in ancient Rome, there are any number of other attractions to explore. :O)
