Colosseum to Capitaline Museum public access without buying ticket to Forum?

Our hotel is very close to Colosseum. Wanted to walk from Colosseum to Capitaline Museum but didn't know if it was possible to walk through the Forum area (do you have to have a ticket to get through that area or are there some "public" roads or paths to get through)? We have visited the Forum before so didn't want to have to buy a ticket to get through that area (which seems like the most direct path to get to Capitaline Museum area. I have looked at google maps and streetview, and just can't tell whether any of the paths are open to the public generally to get through the area. Thanks for any advice.

Craig, there are no "public" roads in the Forum: you have to have a ticket to access it. Even if you do (general entry tickets to the Colosseum also cover the Forum and Palatine) I'm not even sure there's an exit point near the Capitoline.

A straightforward route from the Colosseum would be straight up Via dei Fori Imperiali to Via di S. Pietro in Carcere; follow that up to the Campidoglio.
