Colosseum tickets

In Rick's books he suggests getting tickets and calling some guy a day or two in advance for a tour into the lower levels and such. I had heard that the lower levels were still closed due to flooding in November. Several questions....are they still closed? Any recomendations on tours? Is it worth taking a tour knowing you won't see the lower levels? Any thoughts and ideas are greatly welcomed and appreciated! Also, I will be in rome in 3 weeks, from March 12-18

Yes, the lower level is still closed. I personally don't think you need a tour for the colosseum but that's up to you and how much interest you have in the site. There are tons of informational signs which are very good. If you decide you would like a tour you can book entry tickets and a tour directly with the official seller. http://www.ticketclic.it/Gb/HTML/musei/colosseo.cfm Donna

Todd, For a tour of the "main" areas of the Colosseum, you might consider taking one of the "official tours" there. As I recall, you can avoid the queues by purchasing your ticket on Palatine Hill (details in the Guidebook). I tend to avoid the "Guides" out front hawking "English tours". You'll have to go through security when you enter. Once inside you can choose Audio Guides or the tour. I chose the tour and found it to be outstanding! I prefer having a "live Guide" so that I can ask questions. Happy travels!

Liz, it hasn't been announced when or if the underground tour will resume so who ever you booked with is just guessing. They closed the underground due to massive flooding. They also had snow this year which caused some problems. Hopefully they will resume the tours sometime this spring but until there is an official announcement I wouldn't make any plans that can't be changed or refunded. Donna
