Colosseum Ticket Update

Hi there, I have been reading the forum about buying tickets to the Colosseum, including the excellent article written by Donna over on TripAdvisor. Thank you Kathy for providing that link. My question concerns buying tickets for the summer and what I believe is a change to the purchasing. The coopculture website now talks about quarterly availability. They say that on Monday June 11th (which isn't the first Monday of the month) you will be able to buy tickets on quarterly availability for July, August and I believe September. Then they say that on Monday, July 18th you will be able to buy tickets for July based on monthly availability????? I am not sure what the difference is. Are they doing a sort of presale then whatever is leftover selling again a week later? Doesnt really make sense for Juky tickets but we are interested in August. We are looking at the combined arena/belveder tour. Is this, as it appears to be, a change to the previous way of buying only one month in advance on the first Monday of the month? Can you really get August tickets on June 11th? Unfortunately, although the website English is MUCH better than my Italian I am having some difficulty in understanding and I don’t want to get up at 3 am on the 11th to only be disappointed and have to wait until sometime in July to make our purchase for August. BTW this forum is fantastic for answering questions..

Great question! I'm going at the end of July and was wondering the same thing. I find it very confusing.

This quarterly availability was introduced in March for April, May and June. These tickets will go on sale on June 11 at 9am Rome time.

They are releasing the tickets in batches to avoid large companies scooping them all up. They will release tickets every Monday of this month for specific times. Purchases that were cancelled for one reason or another or tickets that are left over will be available on these Mondays. Just keep checking the site to see if the tickets you want get re-released. It's quite possible they do as they find new ways to prevent tour companies for scooping up these tickets and selling them for 10 times what they are worth.

So to answer your questions, on June 11th they will release tickets for July, August and September dates for the underground and/or belvedere tours.

Unless they have changed the ticket rules dramatically, it possible to buy entry (not tour) tickets to Colosseum/Forum on the day just by standing in line -- last time we did this, the Colosseum line was immense but the Forum, just across the street, only had about 20 people in line. So we bought the combo tickets, saw the Forum, and then came back early the next morning and got in the pretty-short line of people who already had tickets.

Just an update for anyone following this thread. Today I got up at 3 am to try and get tickets for the underground and belvedere tour. The website was very unstable and I kept having to recover the webpage. Finally I got as far as the date I wanted jn August. I indicated 5 full tickets and 1 reduced ticket. Unfortunately when I added it to the cart, only the reduced ticket showed. After many unsuccessful attempts to add more tickets, it still only showed the one ticket and everythjng sold out in the meantime. Oh well. Not sure if more tickets for August will be available next Monday June 18th or if I now have to wait until the first Monday in July. Very frustrating but not unexpected I guess with something so popular. Back to bed for me.

the same thing happened for me, but I got up at 6am EST. I could only get 1 ticket but need 5. What is the best option #2 now--tour company ?? I don't want to wait until August now to try to get the tickets from this site again if they same thing will happen.

Hi, I was also on the website this morning trying to get Underground tickets for the Colosseum in August. It was very frustrating and impossible to get through! I am also trying to figure out what I should do. Should I try to book a tour through a tour company, or just purchase a regular timed ticket? I would also be interested in hear if anyone has a good recommendation for a guided tour. Thank you!

There are tens of thousands of people all trying to book these tours at the same time and it causes the site to be very slow and crash at times. There may be an opportunity to book these tours next Monday, the 18th, as they say they will release more tickets.

From Monday June, 18th starting from 9 AM it will be possible to reserve Undergrounds’ and Belvedere’s tours according to the monthly availability for July 2018

It's one more chance to possibly get these tour tickets.

Thanks everybody. Good to know I am not the only one in this predicament. The worst part was actually being able to grab the six tickets but then only having the one appear when I clicked add to cart. Since I am looking at August, I assume I will have to wait until the first Monday in July???? to possibly book my underground/belevedere combo tour ticket. Hopefully someone can confirm the date and also answer the query about an appropriate tour company.

We also booked tickets this morning. Maybe. My request went through and I have those tickets sitting in my inbox. However, UniCredit didn't like my boyfriend's credit card. So, we tried again with a different card and got the message, "You have already booked these tickets, but payment failed." We are not clear if he has tickets and is waiting on the book to push through an authorization, or if this is the way they prevent people from purchasing more than 6 tickets at a time -- so when he went back to try a different card, they thought it was for another set of tickets?
We are in contact with the bank and CoopCulture, so we will see. Otherwise, we will try again next week, as you suggest you will have to do for your tickets in August. What I'm not clear about is if you, and my boyfriend, will not be able to be the ones to do so? Since they will already see a reservation in your name.

Heads up. They appear to be gradually releasing more tickets. I can see availability on our date now, for 1-2 tickets in each time slot. They go fast though!

@birvine212, I had the same issue this morning. I didn't personally want to spend the money for a tour company -- especially since my kids get free entry through the official website. I had read the suggestion on here awhile back to try booking a tour in another language and found plenty of space on the Spanish-language underground/Belvedere combo tour. So for about 60E total, we get access to those areas, and we can just read up on it or download an audio tour before we go. Just throwing it out there in case it's an appealing option for you!

Hi everyone! I was able to get tickets for my family for the underground + arena tour on the day I needed. It looks like they released a bunch of tickets for my day in the past hour or so (I’ve been checking frequently).

Hi everyone. Thank you for all the suggestions. We are looking for the combo underground/Belvedere tour which seems to have the most limited availability, especially in English. I see there is lots of availability if you only want the Belvedere tour on our date which is August 15th. I am from Canada so our second language is generally French and they don’t appear to have any active French speaking tours. Might have to go with the suggestion about booking the Spanish tour and somehow downloading an audio guide. We also might just split up as a couple of us could go on the 18th. Please continue to post any updates. I guess I should be grateful I was able to at least book the Scavi Tour at the Vatican for the date I wanted. Just love this travel forum for the information its’ members provide.

eeccrodgers, what did you book? If it was anything involving the Belvedere or Underground, it's a guided tour as no one is allowed to access those areas without one. Did you book a tour in English?
