Colosseum Third Level & Underground Tour

Does anyone know of a tour company that offers tours to the Colosseum Third Level & Underground? We are going in August with our 3 kids and I think they would love this.

Why don't you call the number and book it yourself? It's only 9.50E per person when you book via calling the company. I have copy and pasted the steps I took from the info Amy (another very informative poster) gave me here on this site: You call +39 06.39967700 and I suggest doing it no later than 6:30 am EST (I have tried for four days from 7:00 EST-12:00 EST and no operators were available) You hit #2 for English ( they speak in Italian first THEN in English) You then hit #0 to book guided tours (NOT #1 for Colloseum) (They again speak in Italian first THEN English) You then hit #3 for Individual admission tickets and guided tours (They will speak in Italian first then English and most likely ask you to stay on the line and then someone answers in Italian. I simply asked in Italian if they speak English and I got a yes!! It was 9.50 E per person for just the guided tour. They take your cc and give you a code! Thanks to Amy I saved around 15E per ticket purchasing this way and using my romapass for entry into the rest of the colloseum, Palentine Hill and Roman Forum!!

My Husband and I are also going to Rome in September and just heard about this tour. Is there a direct website to use instead of calling that you know of? Thanks,
Peg

We just got back form Italy and did this tour on Saturday. First, let me say it was GREAT! You don't actually spend too much time "downstairs" but enough o get a good feeling, especially if you have read the recent Smithsonian article. Phoning was complicated and we asked a good friend who speaks Italian to call for us-he actually had to call twice, but when we got there all was in order. I cannot stress enough that you should get a tour as EARLY as possible. The crowds are smaller, the day is cooler and you'll have time to see more of the Forum and Palatine Hill afterward. RS has a pretty good podcast of the Colosseum you can download, too. AND, just South? of the Colosseum is the Church of San Clemente, with a very interesting church on top of an earlier (12th century?) church on top of a Roman house/Temple to Mithras. A very interesting, and cool, descent.

Last I heard, the tour operators weren't sure the status of tours available after July 30th (or was it June 30th?). Anyway, I'm not counting on this being available when I visit in October, but I'll be checking on it because it sounds very interesting.

When you book directly with this company its only via phone, no website. I didn't find it too difficult to book, just getting the time down right. The tour was great and if anyone wants to see photos of our pics from it copy and paste this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mytravelmemories/ I have an account on flickr but even with a friend's help on here I still can't figure out how to make it one you can click on...lol!!

I had no problem calling the official phone line and booking in English. I can't imagine why anyone would pay extra for some other service/tour company just to avoid calling. With a phone card the call literally costs pennies.

The private company tour is much more than booking direct but it includes a tour of the Forum. It's up to you if it is worth the extra money, I just wanted to put the other option out there.

It depends on which company you go with. Using romemuseum.com cost me 6 euros per ticket extra (I did not want to include the Forum since I'd been there already) and that was worth it to me to get the voucher e-mailed to me so promptly. No, it's not hard to call, but I thought this was a small price to pay for the convenience of the internet.

Has anyone taken the tour? We called and booked a tour for July 21st and want to know if the rest of the Colossuem is included as well. We were told the tour lasted 1.5 hours and don't know if that is just the underground and third tier or the whole thing. Need to know if we should get there early to do Rick's audio tour or just stay after the tour and revisit areas where we would like to take a second look. Thanks.

You are able to visit the rest of the colosseum but a tour of the rest of the colosseum is not included in the price of the underground tour. They are two separate tours. Depending on when your tour is you may just want to visit the rest of the colosseum after the tour. You will have been given most of the same information on the underground tour that you get on the regular tour so you will know what you are looking at. Your entry ticket into the colosseum will also include entry to the forum and palatine hill. Donna

We stayed an extra hour and walked around but did not do another tour. It was our fourth time at the Colosseum so we just wandered. Don't miss the bookstore, which is also very good!
