Colosseum reservation? Vatican reservation?

My husband and I are planning on going to the Colosseum on Sunday, April 14th. I see they are now reserving time slots. How far in advance should I buy a ticket? We arrive on Friday. I'm thinking of getting a Roma Pass because I have a reserve ticket at the Borghese Gallery for Saturday. Then we'd get a discount for the Colosseum. There are so many options for the Colosseum, I'm in a dilemma as to what to do. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Also, we will be going to the Vatican, but not until Wednesday, the 24th. We're visiting some other cities and then back to Rome before going home. Someone said Wednesday is the worst day to go, I assume because St. Peter's is not open until 1pm? We could go on Tuesday before that, but not until late afternoon, so I thought Wednesday would be better. Any thoughts on that?

If you are planning on going to the Vatican Museum, Wednesday morning is a good time - the Papal audience runs from roughly 10am to noon-ish which can mean short lines. St Peter's, however, will be closed until after.

Once the Papal audience has concluded, people will flock to the museum and Basilica

Rather than booking the time slot for the Colosseum, consider taking a walking tour. This will include the Roman Forum and Palantine Hill, right next door, in the same area/complex. I loved this tour so much, I wish we had booked one with the same group for the Vatican. Please check out this website, for a wealth of offerings.

For the Colosseum I found this on the Rick Steve’s guide book updates part of the website. It looks like you can buy a. Super ticket and avoid needing to reserve a time slot

Visitors to the Colosseum/Roman Forum/Palatine Hill now choose from one of two tickets, both good for two consecutive days: a €12 combo-ticket allows one admission to the Colosseum (after 14:00 only) and one admission to the Forum/Palatine Hill; or an €18 "super" ticket, good for one admission any time at the Colosseum and two admissions to the Forum/Palatine Hill. Admission to the Colosseum is free for kids ages 17 and younger (must present proof of age). Access to the House of Augustus and the House of Livia on Palatine Hill is available only with the "super" ticket.

hunt2feed5, I'm not reading it that way on the coopculture website. This is the ordering page for the Super Ticket:

http://ecm.coopculture.it/index.php?option=com_snapp&view=event&id=4B8ED829-2420-248D-37CA-0162D3E7226F&catalogid=09B1FABE-1A26-DA5A-392D-01695DA9CD21&lang=en

It states that the Super Ticket is only good for 1 day and only for the 7 attractions listed: it is not good for entry to the Colosseum.

it also says, "Visitors who already have the ordinary ticket Colosseum-Roman Forum-Palatin Hill can buy on site a SUPER ticket...." This means that you have to purchase an ordinary entry ticket in addition to the Super Ticket, and there's no way to do that in advance without choosing a dedicated time slot; the after-2:00 PM restriction was a thing last year that no longer applies.

In Rick and staff's defense, there have been so many confusing changes to the Colosseum ticketing options/restrictions this past year that I don't know how ANYONE keeps up with them all!

Well the information on coopculture.IT is definitely different than the guidebook updates on the RS website. I leave for Rome tonight... looks like I need to book reservations LOL

I miss the good old days of walking right in but I guess this will control the crowds better. Thanks for the information

You bet. And do us a favor too? It would be great if you'd update us on how things went and provide any insights that might be helpful for other visitors? What with that darn website changing directions more often than I change my socks, I swear, latest observations "from the ground" would be appreciated. :O)

I'm with Kathy - please report back!

I was in Rome for one day last week and it would have been awesome to have had a reserved time/ticket for the Colosseum - but I couldn't figure out the website, so I just did the cr*pshoot of waiting in line. It was only 35 minutes, but still... any time wasted is annoying.

Darn it, Kjersten! I wish you could have dropped a note on the forum when you got all scrambled about on the website. While that stinkin' thing IS confusing, buying a timed, general-entry ticket isn't as tough as snagging tours. I know you could have gotten some help here for that. Oh well, at least you only lost 35 minutes, eh? :O)

I would not recommend trying to visit St. Peter’s on a Wednesday. We were just there this week and had 11 am reservations for the museums which were packed. After we went to try and see St. Peter’s but since it doesn’t open till 1 at that time the line to get in was 1-2 hours long. Either try to go early on another day or later on Wednesday. Also they do not allow metal water bottles such as Hydra Flasks past security. We had to leave ours with about 50 others and pick them back up on the way out.

Hi- I'll be in Rome 6/16-6/20 with my family. I'm trying to book a reservation for the Colosseum and I'm quite confused between that and the Roma Pass. Unfortunately, it appears there are no reservations for the Colosseum while we're there--although it looks like no reservations available the entire month of June. Is this likely? Any other tips on how to avoid lines? Appreciate any tips. Thanks!

From the coopculture website:
https://www.coopculture.it/en/the-colosseum.cfm

RESERVATIONS OPENING
CALENDAR OF RESERVATIONS OPENING WITH GRADUAL RELEASE SCHEDULED ENTRANCE TIME COLOSSEUM TICKETS:
DAILY OPENING
Every day new tickets for the next day at 3 p.m (italian time).
WEEKLY OPENING
Every Monday new tickets for the following week at 3p.m (italian time).

So keep checking the website for ordinary entrance/scheduled ticket availability, and especially Monday 6/10 at 15:00 Rome time for openings the following week. This does not apply to coopculture underground or belvedere tours which went on sale some time ago and are sure to be sold out for June.

As the Colosseum (+ Galleria Borghese) now requires pre-reservations if using the Roma Pass, I don't personally think it's worth purchasing.
