I read RS's 2011 Italy guide book, as well as others, and websites, and everything I read said that there is first a security line at the Colosseum, and then a line to buy tickets. You can avoid the ticket-buying line by buying online ahead of time, but everyone has to go through security. Well, we just got back, and NO security line! Maybe this is old news, but it was a welcome surprise for us. So if you buy your ticket online using the link Rick recommends, NO line!! It was very exciting. There was definitely a line to buy tickets, so I do suggest paying the extra 1.5 euro and getting them ahead of time online.
