from what i've read, apparently massive lines start even in the early AM as the Colosseum opens.
we have entrance tickets (open, no time), but are wondering if it's best to plan on seeing it bright and early or towards evening?

When did you buy your "open" tickets? If it was June 1 or after, you won't be able to enter the Colosseum before 2:00 PM (new procedure).

In the summer I prefer to go in the morning to avoid the heat of the day. If your "open" tickets don't have the 2pm warning on them you will be fine to use them at any time. If you bought them the evening of May 31rst you should check your tickets. Once the colosseum closed for the night all tickets bought online were considered purchased on the 1rst and are set to the 2pm time limitation. If they are truly the "open" tickets this is great and you can choose any time to use them
