Colosseum CLOSED?!!!

Has anyone heard anything about the Colosseum being closed to visitors in the beginning of July? I've been trying to reserve tickets for the underground and 3rd ring tour, but the website is not responding. I saw someone comment on another travel forum about it being closed the 7th to the 16th.
We're horribly upset and hoping someone has some concrete information.

Ugh! I am upset now too. I was online at 3am on Sunday morning to book our Underground tour when they were released and could not figure out why I could not book any dates during that week. It was so frustrating. I keep checking back but nothing has been released for those dates. I thought about splurging on a private guide but it sounds like that may not even solve the problem. I can't believe they wouldn't post the event somewhere to let people know in advance of the closure. I could have moved Rome around to a different part of my month-long trip but now I am stuck since everything else is now set in stone.

If anyone hears anything as to whether or not the rest of the Colosseum will be open during that time, please post here to let everyone know. I hope the whole thing is not shut down. Aaaargh...

I was able to buy general admission tickets from coop site for 12th July so I presume Colosseum is only partially closed. Would be stupid for them to close it completely after selling thousands of general tickets for that period.

So I think while underground and 3rd ring will not be accessible, the rest is open.

Looks like Sunday, July 5th the Colosseum is closed. Go to rome-tickets.com and you'll see that date is blocked from selection. Maybe the lions and tigers have a day off?

Robert, July 5th is the first Sunday of the month. As of a year ago, all Italian STATE museums, monuments and archeological sites are free admission on those days: that's why it shows as "blocked". It's usually advised not to try and sightsee the most popular of those (Colosseum in Rome; Uffizi in Florence; etc.) on free days as they're mobbed.

Only the underground section is going to be closed from the 9th to the 16th. The coopculture website was down for a couple days, but is operational now.

We're disappointed to not be able take the underground and 3rd ring tour, but glad that we will still be able to visit the colosseum.

That's good news, Patti! Seeing most of it is much better than not being able to see any at all (although the exterior is pretty darn impressive on its own)? Now you can go back to getting all excited about Rome. :O)

We tried to enter the Colosseum on Sat., May 23. There were wide, unorganized lines for those with and without tickets. We asked several employees and they insisted that we were in the line for those with tickets, we had purchased them at the Forum. They said the wait would be about 2 hours. We gave up. There was a similar line at the Basilica. We returned to Rome on Sat., June 13 and entered the Colosseum right away with a Dark Rome Tour. Again, the lines were huge even for those with tickets. So, tours look like the way to go! At the Vatican, we were able to walk right in with our online ticket. But each visit, lines to the Basilica were long.

The colosseum is not closed on those dates but the underground tour is sold out. It's very popular and thousands of people are trying to see it and they cannot accommodate everyone. You can still get entry tickets and book the regular tour if you wish.
