We're visiting Rome for the first time in May and will devote one day to Ancient Rome. Should we visit the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill with a tour or on our own?
Generally I could go either way, but we used a guide -- with a small group -- for that tour. The best part was skipping the line. Okay, second best. The guide was loaded with info -- and knew where we could refill our water bottles. Just sayin'.
I'm not one to pay for tours when I can see something on my own. However, we did book a small group tour of the Colosseum and Forum and I've never regretted it. The guide made it come alive and we got so much more out of it than I think we would have on our own. We were 2 adults and an 11 y/o.
I have done them on my own and am positive I would have gotten more out of it with a guide.
Last year we used Rick’s audio tour for both. We have taken tours with guides when on a Rick tour in the past. We found in our case the line to get in without a guide but with a time set was much shorter than a tour. The audio guide was very helpful and we could go at our own speed.
Great - thanks. Any tour guide recommendations?
I used the one recommended in the RS guidebook. It's been several years so probably not relevant.
We used this company last week for a small group tour of the Colosseum With Arena Access, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum. Very pleased to recommend.
