Colosseum/Forum/Vatican tours

We are taking our 3 teens to Rome in June and wondered if we should book a private tour for the Vatican/Colosseum/Forum in advance or wait till we get to the site and hire one of the many college students offering tours on the spot as we have done as a couple in the past. Any recommendations for/against/tour guide contacts?

The problem with hiring a guide on the spot is they may not be licensed. Other than that, if you decide to go with one of them I would talk to the person actually giving the tour before paying for it. If they seem knowledgeable then I'd book with them, if not, just look for someone else. It's easy enough to book before you go. You can use the official sites for both the colosseum and the Vatican museums. http://www.ticketclic.it/Gb/HTML/musei/colosseo.cfm http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do?weblang=en&do Donna

sign up for the Vatican under the Stars - a Friday night tour that is only during May-Sept. Small groups with a guide/audiophones. We are booked for 5/19 and can't wait for it. Note the lower level of the Colosseum is now open. Bon voyage.
