Colosseum experience

We booked the Third Ring tour as soon as the dates opened up (a couple months or so in advance) and then purchased the entry tickets online and printed the voucher.

On June 26 we arrived an hour before the tour and were able to skip to the front of the line with our documents. The portion of the security line we waited in was short.

We were directed to a ticket desk (I think it was number 9) and there was virtually no line there. The gentleman gave us our tickets and told us where to meet the tour. We were 30 minutes early and no one else was there until the start time. (The others were part of their own tour as well.)

It was a worthwhile tour, great to have the additional historical context, and access to two areas that others didn't have.

Thanks for the report. This has been my experience the many times I've been there. It's all very easy to do and it's a great tour.

Thanks for the tip. We went last September, on a weekday, in the middle of the day, without booking a tour. It was wall to wall people and selfie sticks under blistering sun and heat. It pays to have a little planning and pre-arranging for sites like this.

A few questions for a person going to Rome in December for the first time, who did you book the tickets thru, what time did you go? A link would be very appreciated for the tickets if you don't mind. Thanks

We lucked out when we went early Sept last year. We were staying for 5 nights and were about a 2 min walk to the Colosseum from our accoms. I didn't prebook the underground and was ready for disappointment...but...my mom and I walked over first thing on day #2, asked if they had any slots that day...they had some openings at 1pm or so, so we were able to do the tour. Not that I recommend not booking if your heart is set on it (I was OK seeing it or not)...or if you are only there for a day or two...I would have taken a space over any of the next few days...it was neat to see the underground and 3rd tier.

Unfortunately, I did not book underground tickets ahead (we'll be in Rome in 4 weeks) Now if we want to see it I have the choice of joining a tour in Italian or Spanish (only choices not sold out on official site) Or taking a Walks of Italy tour (95 euro x3) or a Colosseum Night Opening + Hypogeum tour with Tuscany all/Rome-museum.com (24 euro x3)
Any advice?
