colosseum entrance tickets

I just need a ticket to see the top story of the Colosseum. No guide, no skip the line, no video, etc. Do I still need to buy in advance or can I get there early in the morning?

My understanding is that they can only be bought online in advance. Not sold at ticket booths on site. Possible you'd be able to buy one on your mobile device the day of.

There are no colosseum tickets sold onsite; only online, and only by open time slot. Also, can you clarify what you mean by "top story"? The most upper levels (Belvedere) have been closed to visitors for quite some time, and I don't believe they could be accessed without a tour back when they were open.

You'll need to go with a tour group to access anything beyond the second level. And the only time you can get tickets onsite is the free day on the first Sunday of each month. Those used to be only online too but they recently relaxed that requirement.

As I said, I just want to go inside the Colosseum and see the view. That should be the simples, cheapest ticket. My question was, can I buy the ticket there or do I have to purchase it on line? Don't inform me of underground, guided or expensive tickets. Thanks.

Don't inform me of underground, guided or expensive tickets.

Um, no one did that? Your question was confusing as "top story" usually applies to the Belvedere levels which are closed. Questions about those pop up now again so yours could have been about those.

I previously answered your question about on-site ticketing Again, no. you cannot buy a ticket from a ticket booth at the Colosseum in the morning. They are only sold online or by phone, and by specific day and time slot. If no open slots are available on the day you wish to visit, you're out of luck. Most people book quite some time in advance, as tickets become available, but for whatever reason you don't want to do that, then you can try to make a reservation online or by phone when you're in Rome. They'll tell you if there are any open time slots left or not for the day(s) you're available to visit.

Sometimes tickets that were previously sold out for a specific day become available again if the purchasers don't show up or the sale didn't go through.

I'd provided the coopculture ticket site with all of the options: This is the least expensive ticket to get inside: no underground, arena, quided tour, etc. You're on your own.

Yup, as others said, you need to be a part of a tour to have the views from the "top". If you are alone, security funnels you back down at a certain point. It seems weird it is like that, but it is what it is.

Brandon, there is nothing above the 2nd ring that anyone at all can access, even with a tour. All of the coopculture tours state that "III Level of the Colosseum" is not included so there's no higher-up viewing available than what you can access all by yourself with just a basic-entry ticket.

Kathy- Sorry didn't mean up more. But the spot on the highest levels with the best views of the Colosseum were only accessible if you were in the tour.

That's weird. I'm not aware of any tickets/tours that access levels higher than the 2nd, and 1st and 2nd levels are accessible even with a standard ticket. If you know of such a tour, could you provide the link? Thanks! I wonder if what you were being diverted from was access to the arena floor?

No this wasn't for the arena, this was on the second floor. Once you go through all the exhibits, there is a spot overlooking the arena from the second floor. We were funneled down the stairs instead of being able to go to the "lookout". I asked why we couldn't go to that spot and the lady said that only guided tours were allowed.

Ah, OK, so it wasn't to a ring higher than 2nd floor but only a restricted viewing area, although it's possible it may have required just a few steps, and been able to accommodate a limited number of people. That's what looking for; thanks!
