Well, looks like I waited too long to book our guided tour for the Colosseum (we will be there in mid-June). Does anybody have any recommendations for private tour guides or tour operators for this?
Also, I am expecting that lines and crowds are pretty crazy in the morning. If we wait until early afternoon, is it likely that the crowds will be slightly more manageable?
Walks of Italy. Took several of their tours including the colosseum. All were great
I've been there for the last several years and there are ALWAYS tour guides milling about inquiring if there are any people who would like to join their group.
You might try Ezio Monti . . . [email protected] . . . He's well recommended by Rick in his Italy book and there are many accolades on line. My family just hired him last week to do a day tour outside of Rome mid June, so he might still have some folks available to help you. There's a family on Trip Advisor who raves about Ezio's tour of the Colosseum. Good luck!
Sonia Tavoletta does a fabulous job. We've taken her tour as have several of our guests over the years. [email protected].
Rick's audio tour was good enough for me -- and my husband doesn't like even that much "directing" when visiting a site. A chacun son gout.
We split our visits, getting tickets one morning at the Forum ticket office where the line was short and showing up the next morning at the Colosseum for the shorter line of people who already had tickets.
There are still some night time underground tours available if you want to check those. These are great tours and much less expensive than private companies.

It's going to be crowded no matter the time. I think a.m. would be better, though. The earlier the better.
We just returned Thursday and did the lower level and upper ring - as Donna recommended - booked on line with www.coopculture.it. Book the tour, plus buy your tickets (good for 2 days - Colosseum + forum) online. We walked right in - no lines. Loved it.
