Colosseum and Testaccio food tour on the same day?

Is it dumb to try to visit the Colosseum and do a Testaccio food tour on the same day?

I've got 3 days in Rome at the end of March. My plan so far is:

  • Vatican Museum Tour (early), Borghese gallery tour (5pm), St. Peters in between if the line is short
  • Colosseum, Forum, Testaccio food tour
  • St. Peters (early if I didn't do it earlier), walking tour/catacomb/just wander around the Centro Storico

The Vatican and Borghese tours are already booked but I've still got a few days before I have to book Colosseum tickets. The Testaccio tours I'm looking at start around 10:30 and last around 4 hours (so until 2:30). Would it be feasible to visit the Colosseum first thing, do the Testaccio tour, then come back and visit the Forum? Or is there another way I can order things to make it work better?

Jeff,

I have been on the Testaccio food tour and it is really amazing. You get to see a different side of Rome. You can visit the Colosseum in the morning (entry tickets when it opens). It will take you ~20-30 minutes to get to the Testaccio area from the Colosseum by transit/walking, 6 minutes by taxi. You can then head back over to the Forum for a late afternoon visit.

Alternatively, if your heart is not set on the Testaccio tour, you could take the Twilight Trastevere tour which means you could do the Colosseum and Forum back-to-back as the Trastevere tour runs in the evening. I have also been on that tour and while you don't get to visit the market, you do get to visit small little shops and restaurants in Trastevere.

You might look at doing the Testaccio food tour first, then get over to the Colosseum for entry around 3:30. You may be able to take the #3 tram.

Then do the Forum on day 3 - you have 24 hours to enter the forum after your timed Colosseum entry,

I echo Mark’s suggestion! We were in Rome this past May and visited the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Forum all in one day. By the time we got to the Forum we were pretty overwhelmed and I wish we’d scheduled time to see it on the following day.
The Testaccio food tour is really wonderful! If you follow Mark’s suggestion to do it first, you can then take a leisurely walk via the orange grove and rose gardens back to the Colosseum for a late afternoon tour. An added bonus to this itinerary is that everything you do prior to your Colosseum visit is likely to be uncrowded, which will really add to your enjoyment!

Thanks for the responses. I just want to double check, does the Forum entry have to be after the Colosseum entry or would I be able to visit the Forum first (within 24/48 hours depending on the ticket)? I'm going to try for an underground or attic ticket so I might end up swapping days 2 and 3, but if I book a late Colosseum ticket on day 3 I still want to be able to visit the Forum (my flight's at 8am so no sneaky morning visit before I leave)

From the Colosseum website:

Entrance: either from the Colosseum or the Roman Forum-Palatine area
You can book the entrance time to the Colosseum and decide whether to visit the Roman Forum, the Palatine and the Imperial Fora earlier or later

ONLY 1 entrance to the archaeological area of the Roman Forum-Palatine and Imperial Fora at the desired time, within 24 hours before or after the booking time at the Colosseum;
