Colosseum

We have a free day on Sunday, July 9th.
We planned to go to the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill first thing in the morning when it opens at 8:30 and join a guided tour.

BUT i just found out that every first sunday of the month is free and it will be very crowded and no reservation is allowed.

My Questions:

1). If the entrance to these 3 sights are free on July 9 then how about the guided tour inside the colosseum ? Will the guided tour be free as well ?

2) if the guided tour is not free -- is there a separate line to buy these and skip the line ?

Thank you !

1) They don't conduct tours on free days, it's too crowded.

2) N/A

Right: July 9th is the 2nd Sunday in July so not a 'free' Sunday.

If you want one of the 5-euro guided tours of the main part of the Colosseum offered by Coopculture, you must buy a general-entry ticket (€ 14,00 per adult ticket online) good for the Colosseum/Forum/Palatine, and reserve your tour by phone: +39 06 399 67 700.

Tours of the underground/3rd ring must also be reserved in advance either by phone or online These are a little more expensive, must be reserved in advance, and tickets sell out within hours of becoming available either by phone or online. You must also purchase a general-entry ticket but that can be done at the reservation desk when you arrive with the voucher for your tour.

Thank you so much for the information - especially pointing out that July 9 is the second sunday.

Is the underground tour of the colosseum really worth seeing ? Or the basic 5€ tour is good enough ?

Any suggestion which of the 3 sights should be visited first and last between colosseum, forum and palatine hill.

Thank you

Only you can decide if the underground tour will be worth it for you. If it is you'll need to book at 9am Rome time on Monday morning. This is when the tickets go on sale. They sell out within an hour or so.

As for the order, if you book the underground I would wait to see which time slot you get, if any. If you decide not to do the underground tour and either tour on your own or book the regular tour I would say to visit the forum/palatine hill first, in the early morning, to avoid the heat of the day. Visit the colosseum later that day or the next day. You entry ticket is valid for two consecutive days with a single entry to each site. The forum/palatine hill count as one site because they are connected by an internal walkway.

We did the basic tour as that was all that was available when we first went in 2008. Fast forward to 2014 and we ponied up for the underground and 3rd tier. I actually am glad we did - it was neat to see both areas (and they weren't crawling with people). Some nice views from the 3rd tier as well.

Well, if they didn't land an underground/3rd ring tour about 8 hours ago when tickets became available for July, 'fraid they're out of luck now! The 5€ tour of the main area of the arena may still be possible, though, and the underground is visible from up there.

Do they release tickets every monday for the week ?

We wont need the tickets till July 9.
I guess the bottom line is to buy/book the basic guided tour (5€) or the underground guided tour as soon as possible.

They release tour the third Monday of each month for the following month. If you didn't get them this morning you are most likely not going to get them. Most dates for July are already sold out.
