By purchasing a ticket to the Coloseum, is there any narrative or "guide" that takes you through the Coloseum, or are you just purchasing admittance to wander through on your own? Do I need to book a "tour" to get some narrative, and if so, any suggestions?
Do you have Rick Steves' Rome Guide? There is a self-guiding tour of the Colosseum as well as many other sites and walks. You can also downoad and MP3 audio tour at iTunes, "Rick Steves Rome: Colosseum Audio Tour."
Make sure to purchase your tickets at the Forum first and not the Colosseum as the line to the Colosseum is huge but there is no line into the forum and most visitors are not aware it is the same ticket for both. We booked the most amazing tour with a company called Roman Empire Tours and we absolutely loved it. I strongly recommend booking with these guys, they are Irish and no there stuff with great humour aswel. Here is there website http://romanempiretours.com/ Best of luck.
Last month, we took the Coloseum Underground tour and had an excellent guide who actually took us through all the levels.
By purchasing tickets you are just paying for entry to the three combo sites, the colosseum, forum and palatine hill. If you wish to take a tour or rent an audio guide they are extra. If you want "live" narrative you must book a tour. If you just want information as you look you can take a guide book or rent an audio guide. Donna
