I am trying to purchase tickets on line in advance for the Collosseum/Forum. When I check for the dates I need (Sept. 9, 2010) it says those dates are not available. Why not just wait until you arrive in Italy to buy the tickets? One method would be to purchase a combo ticket at the ticket booth on Palatine Hill. That includes the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill.
I've found that Rome can be "busy" in September, but you should have no trouble buying tickets. For touring inside the Colosseum, I really enjoyed the "official" guided tour. Wireless receivers were supplied, so that even those in the back of the group could hear the Guide. The cost is quite reasonable (I recall it was about €7 but I'd have to check my records to confirm it).

Thanks Ken for the info. We were just trying to avoid waiting in line. As I recall we wasted a lot of time in line once in November. Being September is much busier we were trying to avoid that.

Are you getting a Roma pass? That is what we did and
I think we used it for those two sites as well as our transportation via rail.

We also bought tickets at Palatine Hill and there was no line.
