For anyone who has been waiting for underground tours for October - they are now available online from Omniticket.it. At this time, there looks to be lots of availability.
Unfortunately, I can't navigate the website well. When I look, there are only regular tour tickets. None that say specifically "underground" tour. Would you be able to direct me?
http://www.ticketclic.it/Gb/HTML/musei/colosseo.cfm If you choose the option to Collect Tickets onsite instead of printing at home, it will take you to the page to choose a date. After you choose the date, it will take you to the page where you can choose the underground tour. VISITA GUIDATA SOTTERRANEI - ENG - these are the correct tours of the underground, and third tier. There are several English tours per day on the day I am going (10/10).
From there, it is pretty standard and very easy. Let me know if this doesn't work for you and I will see what other directions I can determine for you.
If you book online you will be charged for the tour and entry. If you're using the romapass you should call to save yourself the entry fee. Just let the operator know you'll be using the romapass for free entry and they will just charge you for the tour. If you're not using the romapass you can book online or by phone. 011 39 0639967700 donna
Happy to report that after waiting months for them to schedule tours for the end of October (10/28), I purchased our tickets this morning (3 a.m. EST 9 a.m. in Rome) through the Pierreci number (011 39 06.39967700 from the U.S.). I was on hold for approximately 4 minutes and the entire call lasted under 10 minutes. Less than 10 minutes later the e-mail verification came through. Daniella spoke excellent English. Cost per ticket 21.50 euros per person.
Is Omniticket legitimate? The only other tour I booked for Italy was through the Vatican itself. Is this the way to book the underground through the Colloseum?
THe tours can be booked through the Coliseum directly, but we did it with a private company- Walks of Italy. It also included a tour of the Forum and Palantine Hill.
Thanks to everyone who responded, I just booked my tour for Nov. I am pretty excited about touring the underground section of the Colosseum. I booked it online and chose the VISITA GUIDATA SOTTERRANEI - ENG tour. It was simple, hopefully we'll arrive and the tickets will be waiting and it is a simple process to pick them up. Travel safe.
Yes, omniticket is legit. It is the official seller of tickets and tours for the colosseum. There is only one company that I know of that is authorized to give tours of the underground, all other companies actually use the colosseums guides and then meet you after. I would just book directly and if you wish a tour of the forum and palatine hill book that separately. Donna
Walksoftitaly.com emailed me to say they are not sure it will be continued. They said some tour companies may sell them without validity. Wait to see if still operating in October was his advice.
They are only scheduled to run through the end of October but the omniticket site is offering the tour for November dates. These tickets may end up being canceled if the weather conditions are bad. You can book for October dates now on the website or by calling. Donna
Walks of Italy has confirmed to me via email that they have put their Colosseum underground tours on sale for the month of October after "final confirmation from Rome's colosseum management" whatever that means. Why so late they didn't say, probably an Italy thing. Anyway they advised me to book quickly since I was on their waiting list for the tour, and they have both an early morning and an afternoon version of the tour. I follow them on twitter so I actually saw the announcement first there and booked right away through the link they gave: http://www.walksofitaly.com/colosseum-hypogeum Excited, I've heard it's amazing! I've visited the Colosseum many times but this will be my first time to the underground.
The official ticket site opened up tours about a week ago for October. There are still plenty available for those wishing to do the underground portion of the colosseum. The total for entry and tour will be 21.50 euros. Your entry ticket will also get you into the forum and palatine hill. http://www.ticketclic.it/Gb/HTML/musei/colosseo.cfm Click the collect onsite option to see all the tours offered. These tickets will allow you to bypass the lines outside and remain in the colosseum for as long as you wish. Donna
Is the undergound tour guided if purchased from omniticket?
You can only visit the underground on a tour. It is not open to the general public. You can book it and entry tickets through the omniticket site. Just choose the "collect onsite" option to see the tours available. Donna
We just took our tour this morning. The guide said they will stop shortly due to the renovations occurring at the Colloseum. It was very cool to be able to go underground and to the third tier. Be prepared - there is a lot of climbing as the elevators are still out.
I'm 62 and it was a struggle - but definitely worth it.
