collision damage coverage

I just reserved a rental car through CarRentals.com to rent a car from Dollar in Italy. It gave me an option to purchase Collision Damage coverage while I was making the reservation rather than doing it directly at the car rental counter. I purchased it for a fair price but later realized that it was through Travel Guard. I just read on this website that Travel Guard is not valid in Italy. Has anyone had experience with this?

The car rental collision policy that Travelguard displays on their website doesn't exclude any countries. I'd still give them a call to make sure.

Check with your credit card company if they provide any coverage

Andre L. Who is Italian explained that under Italian law no non-Italian company can provide car insurance. That is why you should not rely on credit card or third party insurance in Italy. You need to get the coverage offered at the rental counter in Italy. You need to be careful who you listen to. Someone who says check with your credit card should explain their experience with rentals specifically in Italy. I'll take the word of the Italian, who confirms what I have read many times: you cannot waive CDW on cars rented in Italy, even if you think your credit card or Travel Guard will cover it. Actually insurance is a very complicated subject and while most people never have to face the consequences of a mistake, the ones who have report difficulties with their credit card insurance when they try to process a claim.

Almost all American credit cards will not provide automobile insurance in the following European countries: Italy, Ireland, and Portugal. You should take the inclusive insurance package and consider the "0" deduction coverage. In research for this year's trip to Italy the CDW has risen to between 1200-1600 euro ($1560-$2080). We are considering the extra protection of the "0" deductible. Also, we always rent through autoeurope.com and have always been pleased. They are brokers who use the big rental companies. Hertz automatically included CDW and theft for Italy, citing it as required. Now to just find out how to get the additional zero deductible coverage and its cost.

Don't know about Hertz but Avis was 6 euro a day for 0 deductible on car picked up in Siena. Paid at time of car pick-up.
