We (mom and 21yo son) have three possible dates for our visit to the Coliseum - January 6 or 7 or 8. He is a civil/water engineering major and I seriously want the "Full Experience - Underground and Arena" tickets. Any opinion of our chances since it is off season and we have a little flexibility with the date? If we are not able to get those tickets, do you have a tour guide you recommend that will have access to the underground or should we just go for the "Full Experience" with the Arena or the Attic? If Arena or Attic which one? I will be diligently trying at different times 30 days out. I know tickets are released periodically during the day, is it at regular times like top of the hour, half hour, or how does it work?

It is definitely worth doing the underground and attic in addition to the arena..
We had a small group tour with Ariana through http://mindtheguide.com/, which was very good, and also included the Palatine hill and the Forum.

we are going to the Coliseum on 1/6 with two college students. We got a tour through The Roman Guy. I think we have some underground included. One idea may be to get two separate tours on one of those days.
