Colesseum: underground vs arena floor?

We are looking at making reservations for a guided tour of the Colosseum, likely through the Roman guy group. I will be traveling with the family of four, including seven and nine-year-olds.

It seems like the tour which includes the underground is the top of the line, but also more expensive, harder to get, and is booked at the time we want to go. I was thinking of doing the “privileged entrance arena floor Colosseum tour with Roman forum” instead.

Does anyone have experience with one or both of these? Are we selling yourself short missing out on the underground portion?

I've done the Underground Tour. It's the only one that gets you into the underground. However, you can see into part of the underground from the arena floor.

I really like The Roman Guy, but I booked my Colosseum tour directly through the official website: https://www.coopculture.it/en/poi/colosseum/#55 Even the tour operators must book through this site, from what I understand. The main advantage of going through a tour operator for this, is that they have had somebody go online at the right time and snap up the tickets, so you don't have to. However, if they don't have space available, it's unlikely the official site will. Underground tours sell out really, really quickly, often within minutes.

Underground tours have been very challenging to get this year. Evidently, the ticketing process changed and many of the tour companies have been left scrambling.

If you can get tickets directly through the official Colosseum website, book the Underground. I did it years ago, and then most recently at the end of May. It is so much better than it used to be. If I was 7 (or 9) I would think it was pretty cool. If you're more risk tolerant, then book through a third party operator (like the Roman Guy). If they wind up not getting enough tickets (which seems to be happening a lot), they will cancel and either reimburse you or rebook you (but that can be a headache if you've got other things planned and have to work around them). And if you can rebook, it probably won't be for an underground tour. Or, if you're less risk tolerant, then go ahead and book the Arena Floor tour--I haven't heard of anyone having that cancelled recently (though presumably it could happen). It's also pretty cool. I had a ridiculous experience this last trip--my original Underground tour with Walks of Italy was cancelled four days before (two days before I flew to Italy), I rebooked a "regular" tour with the Roman Guy, they cancelled the morning of, but offered me an Underground tour at a different time that same day. I had to cancel my catacombs tour (also with them) but it all worked out. (Note: The Roman Guy guide was excellent.) Ultimately, I wouldn't say one tour is "top of the line" and the others aren't. It's certainly marketed that way, but its more about the "exclusivity" and doesn't reflect the quality (exclusive doesn't mean better in my book). And as another poster noted, you can definitely still see the Underground from the Arena floor.

I have seen on a previous post that people recommend getting tickets direct from Coop culture, however I also read that one would have to wake in the middle of the night and time it just right to land a ticket in this fashion. I thought it would be much easier just to book through a third-party— but I had never considered that those tickets were still not guaranteed! Thank you for the background!

The Underground tour from the Coop site is extremely tough to get. I was successful getting it by incessantly refreshing between midnight and 4:30am. It is possible but you have to be quick and persistent. Tickets are released 30 days prior at the exact time of the tour. For example, in July, right now, tours are 10:30a, 11:30a, 1:15p and some other times (Italy time). I started refreshing just before 10:30am (IT time) and the date went green for about 2 secs and then was red again at the next refresh. Then tried again at the next window and in between as random tickets would popup (probably people that had them in their cart and the card declined -- which happened to me 2x before I got them).

FL doc, I'm seeing that people are having a much easier time getting tickets for the arena floor versus the underground, and have been happy with that choice. Personally, I'd just go with that one as it's become either too risky or too complicated/time-consuming to try and land the underground tickets anymore, and you can see down into it from the arena floor and some other parts.

FL doc: I too am trying to get underground tickets but am using Coop Culture official website to make sure I don't get canceled. I've already come to terms with the fact that I will be up all night this Wednesday trying to get tickets.
Question for lm17: You posted tour times; I assume these are what the website calls the English didactic tour. Do you know what time the underground without the didactic tour opens for purchase?

Correct, the times were for the Underground English Tour. You can visit the underground w/o the tour but it is just you and a representative accompanying you down there w/o any explanations. I do not know what time the tickets for the non-tour open. One thing you can do is try to find a day that is green and uncheck the box that says "show only available". That is how I found the hours for the English tour. Of course, it changed a few times from June to July (I have been stalking awhile). Since the tour times changed, I started refreshing at the museum opening time which was 9:00a IT time to be on the safe side.

lm17- Thank you!!

FL Doc: someone else on another thread suggested this as an option: If you cannot get an English tour with underground, try to get a Spanish or Italian tour with underground. You can pop your earbuds in and listen to RS narration in English from Rick Steves Audio Europe.

We decided to just go with the arena floor tour thru the Roman Guy. It was cheaper, much easier to book, and less likely to be canceled. I guess the dealbreaker for me was when I asked my nine-year-old son and he said, “dad I just wanna see the Colosseum!”
Thank you all for the awesome feedback and good luck to all going the coopculture route!

Sounds like you're all set! Could you pull this thread up when you get back and let us know how it went? I'm especially curious given all the trouble people have had with underground tours/tickets, and would love to hear from more RS posters what they thought of the arena floor option. So far, feedback appears to be very positive but am keeping a finger on that pulse. :O)
