Code to enter when using train ticket machines?

I just bought a train ticket to Salerno at Termini Roma. I had to use the ticket office because the ticket machine asked for my code (probably a Green Pass code) and as an American I didn't have one. I asked the ticket agent and he said I would have to use the ticket windows and not the machines as I didn't have a code.

What about small stations that don't have agents? Maybe those are served only by regional trains, which I think do not require a Green Pass?

Has anyone else had experience using their vaccination documents at the ticket machines? It is inconvenient to go to the ticket window.

You'd either take your smartphone out of your pocket or you'd look around for a tobacconist selling train tickets. To be honest, if I thought ticket windows to be "inconvenient" I'd use my smartphone also at Roma Termini, there is free wi-fi.

probably a Green Pass code

The green pass code is a 25 digits alphanumerical number, it would take 20 minutes and two people to enter it.

That's why every-body and every-machine scans the QR code. Even if ticket machines couldn't scan the QR codes, it would explicitly ask for the Green Pass ID number, not for a generic code.

More, why asking for the Green Pass ID number at ticket machines, but not on trenitalia.com or italotreno.it? The rules do not change depending on how you get tickets.

You say "probably" because you did not push the UK flag and you can't read Italian? Maybe you picked a CartaFreccia fare and the machine wanted you to enter your fidelity card #.

Green pass is required to ride regional as well as high speed trains. You can buy tickets online. You don't enter your green pass to buy tickets online or at the machine. Codes asked for could be the carta freccia number which doesn't apply if you don't have one. I've bought plenty of tickets recently at the machines, online and with the app.... no code required. Also had a ticket from Salerno to Roma Termini.

Given the language differences, I wonder if the agent was talking about a pin number.
When purchasing tickets from a machine ir will ask for a pin number.
This works differently from how we use pin numbers to withdraw cash in th US; in Italy it simply verifies the credit card.
