Coastal train stop 1 night between Nice and Cinque Terre

My wife and I will be travelling between Nice and CT by train and would like to make a 1 day/night stop along the way.

Any recommendations ? We were thinking of Genoa but it hasn't really received rave reviews.
Thank you

I liked Genoa. We spent a night there while traversing from Rome to Nice. We arrived in time for a late lunch, then visited the aquarium and had a very nice dinner at a locals-only kind of place.

It's just about a 5-hour train ride, so I wouldn't force a stopover if you don't have a special reason to see something on the way. Genoa is a possibility, as in San Remo. There are probably other pleasant coastal towns I'm not aware of.

But how much time do you have in Nice? There's practically an endless number of good side-trips from Nice, and taking one of those would not require a one-night hotel stay; I hate those. I guess I feel like I'd rather spend an extra day on the Riviera or visiting a hill town while comfortably ensconced in my Nice hotel rather than pulling up stakes and making a quick stop in San Remo or Genoa, though I confess that I would have made a side-trip to San Remo myself (it's less than 1-1/2 hours from Nice) if I hadn't run out of time.

we had 5 days/nights in Nice, my wife suggested the one day along the way, trimming it to 4..perhaps it's best to stay put for that 5th night.
Appreciate the suggestions

One-night stays are exhausting for most of us. You don't end up with much time to see the place you have landed: basically you have from check-in time (3 p.m. or so to check-out time 11 a.m. or so). There are many wonderful places you can day-trip to from Nice (Villefranche-sur-Mer, Eze, St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, St Paul de Vence, etc.). I'd choose an extra night in Nice with a day trip.

Genoa is a wonderful city and very well worth an overnight stay. If it get mixed reviews it'll be because it doesn't answer to the idea of an Italian city. It is anything but a sanitised place, but in between the dark and dirty alleys you'll find the most wonderful palaces and churches.

Thank you all for your replies.
Last year we spent only 1 day/night in Zell am See and it was not nearly enough, likely not worth the packing and unpacking just because it allows you a different place on your list :)
Thank you all
