Coastal town coming from Pienza to Rome

I’m posting this for my daughter-in-law. She will be visiting Pienza with us, leaving our Agriturismo on May 30 and catching a flight back to the states on June 1 from Rome. They have two little ones ages 6 and 3. They would love to take them to the beach and is amenable to either an overnight or just a day trip before they head to Rome. She will likely want to be close to the airport on the 31st.

They will have a car.

Are they traveling by rental car? Pienza is not near the coast and the route to Rome is through the interior.

Yes, they have a rental car. She mentioned Grosetto.

Grosseto is a city near but not on the coast. Since it’s just a night stopover, they should just look for the kind of hotel they like and drive to the beach. They can also choose how close to the airport they want to be for the departure day drive. Orbetello is close to some stellar beaches, plenty of hotels, easy parking. Sandy beaches at Feniglia and there is plenty of parking there.
Talamone is one I have not been to but it’s close to Maremma park with great beaches, one has parking.

Between Fonteblanda (Talamone) and Albinia there is a pretty well known long stretch of sandy beach that could be good for small children. The road to Rome airport coming from Grosseto passes through there. It’s called Spiaggia dell’Osa (Osa Beach), from the name of the Osa River whose mouth is there.

I wouldn’t stay too close to Orbetello. It sits in the middle of a lagoon and it’s too infested with mosquitoes for my taste.

Along the aforementioned beach there are lots of nice campgrounds but I imagine they will want a hotel.

I found one on that beach, check it out.

There are others nearby, like the Argentario Osa Resort or the Fontermosa hotel. Also more accommodations are in Talamone.

They will probably need to spend the night of the 31st at the Rome airport hotel however. It’s more than 2 hours from that beach to Rome and you need to check in at least 3 hours prior to departure. Italy is running out of jet fuel in about 3 weeks if the Strait of Hormuz doesn’t open, so they may have time to enjoy the beach for a lot longer. It’s not a bad part of the world to be stuck.

PS. Make sure they rent baby car seats. Mandatory for under 12 y.o.
