We are staying at an old farmhouse outside of Siena for a week in October, and would love to see the coast for a day trip (we have a car rented). Any recommendations on something not too far for a day's excursion, and not too touristy/crowded? We were thinking of Castilgioncello, but really don't have a good idea. Ideas on sights, food, etc. much appreciated. (We will spend another day visiting Volterra, so don't need to do that en route to the sea). Thanks -
In October the beach crowds are long gone.
Castiglioncello is a good choice.
Talamone another one.
Further south, you might consider Porto Santo Stefano, on the Mt. Argentario Peninsula.
If you visit in mid October shores are quiet again. Visited Tuscany multiple times myself but the area around Populonia is much nicer.
Populonia has an open air museum dedicated to the Etruskan living there before the roman empire did. From Siena take the SR439 which takes you trough the massa marittima. Also very nice is castello di Populonia. After visiting Populonia there is a large beach about 10 minutes driving North to San Vincenzo. This is called Barrati.

Jerry
The Etruscan tombs in the Baratti Archeological Park are fabulous and can include a lovely forest walk.

At that time of year you should verify open times for all sites you will visit.
thanks for the tips - the area by Baratti/Populonia does sound fantastic - we'll try that.
