If you were going to combine a few days on Italy's coast with a few days in Tuscany, would you recommend the Cinque Terre which is closer, or the Amalfi Coast?
If you were to ask me straight up between the two areas which one I like more, I would give the nod to Cinque Terre but not by much. My wife would say Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Both are beautiful places and both are worth exploring.
However, since it sounds like you are limited to picking one, I would go with Cinque Terre. If you are into hiking I strongly suggest you hike the entire Cinque Terre trail. The hike is amazing and afterward you can end your day with some of the best food you will find anywhere in Italy. And if your iteniary calls for you to return to Tuscany after visiting the coast I think that would rule out the Amalfi Coast because you would waste two full days traveling between the two.
Hi Felicia - As Scott mentioned - It is a tough choice because both areas have so much to offer - That said, and considering that I spend at least one week per year in each section - I would say - Cinque Terre!! It is truly Fabulous and you will love it!!
If you need a place to stay check out Carla's place in Vernazza - Right on the harbor and next to Al Castello

And as far as walking the trail - A Must!! If you only want a section then do the Manarola to Riomaggiore section called La Via dell'Amore(lover's path) Only about a mile long - relatively flat and paved - with a Cafe halfway for a cold drink!! Here's a pic of that section.

Wow. Thank you very much for both replies. Cinque Terre it is!
