I'm looking for cheap but clean hotel to spend last night in Italy before flying home very early in morning. Any suggestions?
Use the search directions in the thread at the top of the board to find numerous discussions on this. Cheap and close to FCO don't go hand in hand very well.
Usual advice on the boards is to enjoy your last night in the ambience of Rome, and take a cab or shuttle to the airport (even if it's at ungodly hours).
We left at 4:30 in the morning on a Friday for a 6:30 flight to Brussels ( and on to ORD). We were at FCO by 5:00 (which was closed up-bring your own snacks)-absolutely no traffic in Rome that early. The traffic lights are even set to flash-no red lights!
@ Linda: Not that the cab drivers would stop if there WAS a red light! :-)
In Florence, we took a cab to the airport at 6am. The red lights were on, and our driver did stop for them, but no traffic. As a result, I could enjoy one of Italy's famous (or infamous) high-speed cab rides without complete fear of death.
MJ, this question is asked often. The answer is that there are numerous hotels near FCO with many having airport shuttles. Since they know why you are there, they are not cheap and reportedly some may not be as neat and clean as you like. The Hilton is the closest with a long ramp into the terminal but, again, they are a bit pricey.
Many, many travelers spend their last night in Rome. Have a great dinner and go to bed early. Your hotel will arrange to have a taxi out front as early as you want. Standard taxi fare for a regular taxi used to be 40Euro but it may be a bit higher now. It's a 35-minute ride early in the morning. The Leonardo Express doesn't begin running until 5:50am so that's out. The early taxi does work well.
Thanks everyone, it looks like we get one more night in Rome!
Smart move MJ. We left at 4:30 in the morning on November 6th-there was NO traffic-got to the airport by 5:00 from the Centro Storico. The airport is virtually shut down-nothing is open so bring some snacks (one last cookie from Italy!).
