We will be traveling for 3 weeks and are visiting Rome at the end of our trip. Do you have a recommendation for a city that is close to Rome to spend the first 2 nights to regroup and relax? Traveling by train, early 50's, traveling light, fit but exhausted by air travel. Oriveto?
There are a few good options but Orvieto is near the top of my list.
I have stayed at The Beehive, 11/2 blks from Terimini train station which connects to all Rome easily by station bus, Metro and trains.Very Old and younger alike use it. Great rates and rec. by Rick Steves. Going to be there in a few days.http://www.the-beehive.com/

Definitely Orvieto! I loved it! It's a great little town. Take the underground tour if time permits; it's only an hour but very interesting.
Porto San Stefano, on Monte Argentario, near Orbetello. It is a quiet fishing village with excellent sea food right off the boats. It is the perfect spot, near Rome, to veg.
Assisi gets my vote. It's a spectacular little town, have a great basilica (two, actually), ruined castles, ultra friendly locals, excellent atmosphere, and spectacular views across Umbria and the olive groves. We spent two nights there and totally relaxed. Quick connection with Rome, too.
