Climbing the Dome of St Peter’s Are Tickets Timed Entry?

I understand that tickets for Saint Peter’s dome cannot be bought in advance. Does anyone know if the tickets to the Dome are timed entry?

That is, could I buy a ticket for the dome at 8:00am for a visit at a designated time later that same day? Or, can you buy a ticket for the dome and use it anytime during that same day? Or, once you buy the ticket, you have to use it immediately.?

Thanks

Tom

Last I knew, no. Basically, after you go through security to get into St. Peters, head to the right, you will see a booth for tickets for the dome.

Part of the reason they are not likely timed, is you can purchase a ticket that includes an elevator to get up to the roof, or take the stairs. From there, you can hang out on the roof, or go up inside the dome. So you can pretty much go at your own pace, with the exception that once you start going up the dome, quarters are tight enough, that you need to keep moving, both up and down. At the top, you can spend as much time as you wish.

The lines for the dome also tend to be much shorter than St. Peters or the Museum, and tend to move quick.
