We would like to stay in Venice for four nights the latter part of September before we embark on a cruise out of Rome. Does anyone have any suggestions for a halfway reasonable yet clean hotel? I am flabbergasted by hotel prices!

It would be good to indicate what is reasonable to you. You could always stay in nearby Mestre, which is what I do now. However nothing is as wonderful as staying in Venice itself and enjoying strolling the canals early AM and having quiet eves there. It is an experience of a lifetime! and no other european city is quiet like Venice. There are convents there for a little over $100 per night also as mentioned on this website previously.

My sister and I were in Venice last March and we stayed at Domus Orsoni. It is a small b&b that she saw on the Samantha Brown travel show. It was very reasonably priced, 60 euro a person per night, and very comfortable and in a good location. They only have five rooms though so I don't know how hard it is to get reservations. We didn't have any trouble but we reserved early.
