clarifying Rome airport to Sorrento by train

Hello, so excited about our upcoming first trip. After skimming the books and the online posting, I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to reclarify how to do this. Landing in Rome airport. Where do I find the train station that will take me to
Naples? Is it actually in the airport? Can I buy tickets in advance? Would you recommend buying tickets in advance now over the internet if I don't really know if my plane might arrive late? Should I wait until we land? Once getting to Naples, I understand I go to another level to transfer to Sorrento, so I think I'm set with that part. Thanks, Caroline

Caroline, you will be landing at Rome-FCO. The airport is actually Fiumicino, Italy and about 30 minutes by train from Rome-Termini. The train station at this airport is in front of Terminal 3. The most popular method of getting to Rome-Termini by train is to take the Leonardo Express. This is a 1st class fare train only. Fare is 14Euro. At Rome-Termini, you change trains to the high-speed that will take you to Napoli-Centrale. You can buy tickets at the train station at Terminal 3. The Leonardo Express runs every 30 minutes. The high-speeds from Roma-termini to Napoli-Centrale run about as frequently during most hours of the day. You don't need to buy ahead. In fact, you really shouldn't as your place might be late thereby putting your high-speed ticket in jeopardy. Just purchase at Terminal 3. At Napoli-Centrale, just go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana train station and buy a ticket to Sorrento. About 4E-5E. Trip takes just over an hour. Just watch out for slightly aggressive people trying to assist you in loading your luggage for tips. Just keep a tight grip on your luggage. Also, keep it near you or within sight on the Circuvesuviana train. At Napoli Centrale, you also have the option to take a bus or taxi to the boat docks and take the ferry to Sorrento.

Larry gave already excellent instructions. I'll add only the travel times for the various segments: FCO - ROME TERMINI (Leonardo Express) = 32 min ROME TERMINI - NAPOLI CENTRALE (Trenitalia Freccia) = 70 min
NAPOLI CENTRALE - SORRENTO (Circumvesuviana) = 70 min When you purchase the ticket at the ticket vendor at FCO, make sure he gives you sufficient time (15 min at least) to transfer trains at Termini from the Leonardo Express to the Freccia to Naples. That is particularly true if you have a lot of luggage or mobility issues. The Leonardo Express arrives several platforms away from the platforms to Naples. So, by the time you get off, look at the departure screens to find out the departure platform, and walk there, you need at least 10 min. Also don't forget to validate your tickets at the validating machines at the beginning of the tracks before boarding (validating tickets is not necessary for the Freccia trains, since they are date/train specific)
