We are getting off a cruise ship in Civitavecchia and heading to Venice. I know we can hire a shuttle to Rome Termini, but would like to take the train (cheaper )the whole way. Is this possible?
yes you definitely can, just go to www.trenitalia.com and type in Civitavecchia and Venezia S Lucia for your arrival and departures, there are many options....
The port of Civitavecchia is about 1/2 mile from the Civitavecchia train station. If you don't have a lot of luggage you can walk that distance without having to wait for a taxi (I presume there will be many cruiseders trying to hail one).
The fastest way is a train to Rome (about 2 every hour, 45 to 75 min ride depending on what type of train), then a Freccia high speed train from Rome to Venice.
You will need to walk to the train station in Civit... While you will find dozens of cabs crowding the entrance to the port, no one wants a half mile drive to the station for 5 Euro. They want the bigger fares to the airport or Rome. You might wave a 20 Euro note and see if you get a taker. If not, walk. It is flat along the beach but you need to climb some stairs to the station. There are no direct trains to Venice from Cvit.. Catch the local to Termini and a direct train from Rome. Try to buy your a Regionale train ticket from Civit.. to Rome somewhere prior to arriving at Civit.. You can buy at any other train station in Italy or travel agency in any Italian town. When the cruise ships disembark in Civit, the little train station is over whelmed by hundreds of passengers buying tickets to Rome. With your Regionale ticket in hand, you can walk to the track area, validate (time stamp) you ticket in the little yellow or blue boxes on the back of the station, and catch the next R train to Rome. Be absolutely sure it is an R. There are some ICs from Civit and those trains require a specific reservation. R trains have no reservation and you may stand till a seat open ups.
Once at Termini, walk to the front of the station and buy your ticket to Venice either from a ticket window or one of the ticket machines. There is at least one train an hour to Venice. Now, IF you are a bit of a gambler, you can buy on-line really cheap discount tickets for Venice but the super economy tickets are no refund or exchange so if you miss the train the ticket is dead. I think you would be safe to book a ticket to Vencie at 1300 (1pm) or later. You should off your ship around 8 am and four hours should be ample time to get to Rome.
