Civitavecchia to Rome termini station

Hi there, im worried about making train connection times, we disembark in Civitavecchia on 24 August (Sat) off celebrity and need to get to Florence that day to check in to our hotel. What’s the quickest way to get there by train? I have looked at Trenitalia website and the only fast train to Florence is departing at 10:20. It doesn’t give us much time to get off the ship get the train to Rome termini which gets in at 10:02 from Civitavecchia. The next train to Florence is sold out. Then it’s slow trains!
Thanks,
Carencia

There are fast trains operated by Trenitalia from Rome Termini to Florence at 10:20, 10:40, 11:26, 12:15, 13:15, 14:18, 15:25, 16:25, etc.

18 minutes should be enough time to change trains at Termini. If you miss it because of a late arriving train, Trenitalia will get you on the next train.

I suppose you are referring to the 10:47 IC train from Civitavecchia to Pisa that is sold out. Just take the train to Rome Termini, as you can see, there are lots of trains to Florence from there.

Hi there, thanks so much for your info. I checked Trenitalia & we can catch the 9:16 from. Civitavecchia to Rome Termini then fast train to Florence 10:20. Will this be enough time to get off ship & make connections? I didn’t think the 10:20 to Florence was sold out? Thanks, Carencia

It is very tight. Probably only really do-able if you are self disembarking. Otherwise you don't know the order in which the ship will be dis-embarking.

Nor do you know which of many berths you will be docked at. Once you are off first you have to take the shuttle bus to the Largo della Pace bus station then transfer the mile or so to Civi Railway station. That all takes time.

It also allows no time for the ship being late for any reason, which does happen.

Depending on where you berth it is often more sensible to walk out of the south dock gate then a short walk along the promenade to the railway station.

The 1143 to Rome allows the day trip crowds to clear from Civi, and still puts you on a fast train, arriving at Florence at 1511, a far more robust timing with a 27 minute connection in Rome.

Or the 1246 fast train from Civi to Pisa up the coast changing there into a regional arriving at 1601- still a decent time to arrive. That 1246 totally avoids the scrum heading for Rome and gives you a good robust timing, allowing for the ship to disembark methodically. Murphy's law says that you are always in a late disembarking cohort.

Thanks @Lake District , good advice. I knew it was tight! Only a few delays will mean we miss our connections! Will research the other options you suggested. A slow train and later arrival may be better all round. Slow & steady wins the race! Which train station at Civitavecchia do I select for tickets on Trenitalia?
Thanks again

Your sentiment about slow trains is not out of place. Do you know that advance purchase discounts for Frecciarossa tickets mean that you cannot change the ticket to another departure, or get a refund? If you miss "your train" have to buy a new ticket at the walkup price, whatever that is on the actual day of travel.

Having been on a few cruises, I do think you need to understand how little control you have over the time of your stepping off the ship. Besides the comment about multiple port locations, our small ship did not use a Cruise Terminal, so we were not permitted (security) to walk on the pier by our gangplank. We had to take the port's own shuttle bus to the traffic circle that is, more or less, the entrance to the Port. We found the trip with rolling luggage to the train station to be hot (in the sun) and bumpy (i.e. from sidwalk paver seams.) The public bus seemed to run only half-hourly, and of course it was way over capacity.

I have read that on large ships, the most costly cabins tend to be allowed to disembark first. They ship also, quite reasonably, give priority to people with early air tickets from FCO, especially if they pay (plenty) for the Cruise Company's transfer to FCO.

It should be noted that the train from Civitavecchia to Rome is a (perfectly satisfactory) basic local train service, I think without parallel long-distance coach seating. As you know, different trains make different numbers of stops, affecting total travel time. We bought walkup ticket from a machine (using a Chip and PIN credit card), and it was unbelievably cheap, just a few Euros.

Actually, Economy advance purchase tickets can be changed prior to the departure time - you must pay the difference for a Base full price ticket. It is the Super Economy advance ticket that doesn't allow changes.

Which train station at Civitavecchia do I select for tickets on Trenitalia?

The one which is just called Civitavecchia.

Civitavecchia Porto is a bus (called Portlink) which runs from the south (foot) port gate the 600 metres or so to the Railway Station and is a 6 Euro add on to any train fare- yes 6 Euro for 600 metres. A taxi won't want to do that journey so to be fair it is an answer for those with mobility issues, but really 6 Euro.

This page is in Italian- I can't find an English language version of it- https://www.trenitalia.com/it/treni_regionali/lazio/civitavecchia-portlink.html
