civitavecchia to Rome...Excursion tour needed for Vatican, St. Peters/ Skip the lines/ Port pick up

I will be traveling to civitavecchia in October. Need a great tour excursion to include a full day in Rome. I hope to visit the Vatican Museums, St. Peters, Colosseum and possible a drive by of others. I would like advise on reputable tour groups who would transport me from the Cruise Port and also give excellent tours of those sites. Would it be better for me to travel to Rome from port on my own...and purchase skip the line tours of the sites ahead of time instead of hiring a company to pick me up? If so...what is the safest and quickest way to get to Rome and the Vatican area? Any advise on how to purchase the tickets and feasible timing?

We can not say enough good things about Rome Cabs. It is a private car service / excursion company and not just a cab company. We always use them for transport to and from the Rome airport and have always been very pleased. They do offer tours of Rome from the cruise port but I'm not sure what the cost will be. Go to romecabs.com and see what you think. We usually send an email and they answer us with a quote within 24 hours. You do have to pay cash (Euros) at the end but not in advance. I assume your cruise is ending in Civitavecchia. If that is the case, let us know and perhaps we can offer alternatives for getting into Rome and then touring from there. TC

First Question -- are you stopping in Civit... or terminating in Civit...? From your question I assume your are just stopping in Civit.... for the day. What time do you have to be back on board. I would count a min of three hours for a round trip to Rome from Civit.... So how time would you in Rome? Most cab rides to Rome will be in the range of a 100 Euro each way. You can do the train for about 10/12 Euro. Let us know your exact travel arrangements so we can provide better answers.

If you're taking a regional train from Civitavecchia, you can get off at Roma San Pietro station, closest to the Vatican. After crossing town by taxi or bus to the Colosseum, area, then your closest train station to return to Civitavecchia will be the large, main Roma Termini station. Rick's Mediterranean Cruise Ports book has about 4 pages detailing transport options from Civitavecchia, plus a couple of tour operator recommendations.
