We will be on a cruise in early May which has a port of call in Civitavecchia. We would like to travel into Rome expeditiously and yet economically without using one of the tours provided by the cruise line (we are more comfortable doing our own thing). Can anyone give me some idea of what a taxi fare from the port to the Vatican might be. Would taking a train be easier or more of a hassle?
This is the 3rd time this question has been asked since yesterday. Scroll down and read some of the prior responses. You can easily and cheaply get to Rome via the train. It is a commuter run with three to four trains an hour. Takes 45m to 1-15m and costs 3-8 E depending on train. The train station is about a mile walk along the beach from the port entrance. There will be a shuttle bus from your ship to the entrance. The cab ride to Rome would be in the range of 70 to 100E. Once at the train station you could walk to the Vatican and visit a number of other sites along the way -- an hour and 15 min walk or a bit more. Or walk across the plaza and take the 40 bus (I think it is 40). Or take the hop on/off bus. That probably be the most efficient use of your time if first visit to Rome.
take the train. i was in rome late oct of 2008 during a student protest with roads to rome blocked everywhere. cost me and a friend 140 euros to get to port from near piazza navona area to civitavecchia with taxi. got real lucky finding this taxi and who cared what it cost. we were determined to be on the carnival splendor!!! for transatlantic cruise. took about an hour and 15 minutes to get to port. have fun and don't stress, just keep track of time!! in rome, go to campo de fiori and taste all the liquers. bought limoncello yum yum and throw your coin in the trevi fountain.
