Civitavecchia to Our Rome Hotel, Help!

So we arrive by cruiseship to Civitavecchia...What's the best way to get to our Hotel w/6 pc of luggage? Our cruise only had 'transfers' to the Airport. We're staying longer. Train looks $cheap$. Taxi appears $200/US. But what's best? Thanks for ANY thoughts. T H

You have a problem -- six pieces of luggage. Without that much luggage it would be easy and cheap to take the train. The train station is only quarter, third of mile from the port entrance. The cruise ship will provide a shuttle to the port entrance. At the port entrance it will be jammed with taxis and prearrange cars. A taxi will NOT want to take you to the station because they might miss the big fare to the airport or Rome. Walking is easy but not with pieces of luggage.

Rome Shuttles has a pretty good reputation so google that to see what they would want to pick you up. Another option would be to find another couple of two to share a prearranged van. Six would bring the cost down considerably. Also go to RoninRome.com and see what he might suggest.

Finally, consider reducing your luggage -- we get by with one carryon each and one rolling carryon bag for the two of us -- three bags total so that we can walk to the station. Have done it four times.

FRANK or?...Yeah, the luggage. So..reading RS's various tips and posts I see MANY people do take the train....then taxi from Rome's trainstation to their Hotel. (Ours is close..the Aberdeen). Grim if it's raining or Multi-ships in port...yes? QUESTION:Literally how far from dock's recovered baggage point to Civitavecchia train platform? Thanks T H

Is that six pieces of luggage for only two people,, or six people ,, or three??

If only two of you, then you have luggage issues.. LOL.

I get you need formal wear,, but, really,, you could pack less and have alot more fun not stressing about luggage,, you should be EXTRA careful where ever you are with that much luggage, pick pockets look for over loaded and stressed out looking tourists.. and you can't keep your hands on all those bags at once. Be careful,, or better yet, be careful and trim off your luggage requirements.

ps,, some taxis won't even fit 6 pieces of luggage,, so mind the size of those bags at least..

Yeah it would be 2backpacks and 4 wheeled suitcases for a Month's cruise. Tough to tote without a cart IMHO. QUESTION:So there's no group Mini-bus shuttle's from Civitavecchia to Rome hotels? Only the train or a licenced car of some sort? T H

It would be nice Steve if you just answered the question instead of adding you little put down. There are some difference between general travel and a cruise. Not that you would understand that.

Civit... is about 50/60 miles from Rome. From the ship's luggage pick up point, there will be a shuttle bus to the port entrance for independent travelers. That distance could be a couple miles or more depending on where your ship is docked in the port. But the entrance will be a packed zoo especially if more than one ship has docked. Since your are going to Rome and don't not have deadline to meet, I would be one of the last off the ship and let the crowd thin out some.

From the port entrance it is about a ten minute walk to the train station -- straight ahead, along the beach -- cannot miss it, just follow the crowd.

Aberdeen is close but not that close to Termini. It will be still be a long walk to the hotel first inside Termini and then to the hotel - probably more than a mile.

We have done seven European cruises - two from Rome. On our first cruise we had hanging bags, large rolling suitcase, a luggage cart for the other bags and paid a horrible price for taking that much luggage. On our last cruise this past October, we have three carry on size bags -- two backpack style and one rolling -- and that include appropriate clothing for formal nights. I will be glad to discuss our packing list with you privately through PMs or direct email, if you like.
