Civitavecchia to Orvieto

We will be at Civitavecchia Saturday, April 20 from 7:00h to 17:00h on a cruise stop. We will return to Civitavecchia Monday, April 29 arriving at 7:00h and disembarking the ship going to Rome until May 2 when we fly home.

Would there be ample time for a private/small group tour on the April 20 stop (7:00h—17:00h)? Alternatively on April 29 might we be able to do a private/small group tour from Civitavecchia to Orvieto then at the end of the tour be dropped off in Rome? I realize the second option could only be definitively arranged with a specific vendor. What I’m asking here is “has anyone on the Forum ever heard of—or done—such a tour”?

I agree, take the train. We are planning a trip to Italy (been there several times) and Orvieto is on our list. From what I read about the city, it can be done on your own.

Consider switching your plans for April 29 and 30. Stay in Rome on April 29 and visit the National Museum sights that day, then take the train to Orvieto on April 30. Trains to/from Orvieto run about hourly from early morning until late evening, giving you a lot of flexibility on when to go during the day and how long to stay. I think that plan might work better for you.

The Civ. cruise port is quite far from the train station (I have walked it). And Orvieto is a very big (and worthwhile) small city with long walks. You need to think about what happens if you miss the ship departure.

Not all taxi and car companies are allowed onto the Civ. piers and to ship side. The port-operated 49-passenger busses sometimes WAIT to leave the little bus terminal until they are close to full, especially if they are serving more than one ship.

Your wishes are reasonable but this is not a slam-dunk plan to avoid expensive ship excursions. Often a 7AM docking schedule does not guarantee YOU can be on the ground at 7:05.

Opinion: Civitavecchia is a remote cruise port, a thorn in the side of every travel agent. (I’ve been there 3 times.$
