Civitavecchia to La Spezia

We are cruising in and out of Civitavecchia and at the end of the cruise, want to take a train up to Cinque Terre. I understand there are trains that run from Civitavecchia to La Spezia and then require a swap to a local train there to get to Monterosso al Mare.

Our cruise comes back to port on the 28th June but there doesn't seem to be many trains running on that day on this Civitavecchia to La Spezia route , however if I look on the italiarail.com site for the 7th June, there seems to be plenty of options on that day (including our desirable 10:47am departure on the InterCity line).

Is there a "summer" type timetable that just hasn't been released yet? Am trying to work out if I need to seek different options for this route or wait to see if there is more times that will get released (I thought there would be more options given it is a busier time of year??)

Cheers,
Paul

The Trenitalia trains get a new schedule in June, but it will be very similar to the current schedule. So, I suggest you look on the Trenitalia website for the schedule for just a few days from now, just to see what’s available.

I assume you're getting off a ship and heading to LaSpezia.

As of now, you'd go to the Civitavecchia train station and catch train # IC510 Torino Porta Nuova at 10:45 a.m. that runs up the coast. It's 9 stops and takes about 3:45 hours. Of course this is subject to change with the seasons.

That train sure beats taking a local train into Roma Termini, an express train up to Florence and make connections on another train to LaSpezia.

OK, thank you all for the responses.

I'll admit, I am a bit apprehensive of waiting until just a couple of weeks before I go to make sure we have guaranteed passage to Cinqueterre that same day though. We have pre-booked/paid accommodation that night up there.

What is the confidence level of being on that 10:47am train once (if) tickets are released?
Should I be booking a "free-cancellation" hire car as a back up?

Hi Paul,
The train timetable release dates can be frustrating. I live here and it is a bit annoying. But overall the Italian rail system is excellent and you can have fairly high confidence of getting tickets a couple of weeks ahead of time.
We typically use Omio because you get to choose from both the main rail operators. If you only use the Trenitalia website then you'll only see the trenitalia trains.

We took the IC 510 on Nov. 4 from Rome to La Spezia. It will also be running on June 28.

Relax and buy your tickets when they become available.

Edited to add: If all else fails, there is always the route from Rome via high speed train to Florence, then trains west to La Spezia. It would require several changes, but certainly doable.
