Civitavecchia to FCO

Does anyone know the best way to get to FCO airport from the port of Civitavecchia? Is there train service?

FCO to Civitavecchia, it's easy on the Regional trains. FCO on the FM1 to Roma Trastevere, then transfer there to the train to Civitavecchia. Should be about 1:45 travel time, and about 10 euros. Enjoy your cruise!

There are private shuttles that will take you from FCO to the cruise terminal but they are expensive. As Jeff decribes above, go to the train station at the airport and buy your train tickets from the airport to Civitavecchia. Some runs will require a train change at Rome Termini and some require a train change at Rome-Trastevere. Doesn't matter which one. All will work just fine. Just validate your tickets (there will be two) at the little yellow box in the train station before boarding.

Larry is right, you can go to Termini to transfer to the Civitavecchia train, but your FCO-Termini leg will be on the Leonardo Express for 11 Euros, plus the cost of the train ticket from Termini to Civitavecchia. If you go to Trastevere station from FCO via the FM1 Regional train, then transfer to the Civitavecchia train at that station, the TOTAL cost from FCO-Civitavecchia will be about 11 Euros. If you are looking for the least expensive way to get to Civitavecchia, I believe this is it.

Opps....misread the original post. Shelly, you want to go from Civitavecchia to FCO. Just reverse the above and you should be fine. But I've heard the lines for purchasing train tickets at Civitavecchia can be horrible after tbe cruises let out. A suggestion I read was to pre purchase your train tickets from Civitavecchia to Trastavere to FCO. The tickets have no dates on them, just a 5.50 euro Regional train ticket. Then you can bypass the ticket line and just wait for your train.

i have read all your replies, it is very helpful information. we (family of 4) plan to take the mediterranean cruise from Rom at 7pm on may 9. -transportation our plane will arrive in the morning on may 9 around noon time, we should be at the port 2 hours prior, so it only leaves about 4-5 hours travel time. which option will be best for us? option 1 take the train from FCO to Roma Trastevere, then transfer to Civitavecchia option 2 take the train express to FCO to Rome termini, then transfer to Civitavecchia option 3 take a taxi from FCO, according to Rick's book, it will cost $60 -train tickets online also i have another question about purchasing tickets on trenitalia website (http://www.fsitaliane.it/homepage_en.html) i typed the location from 'Fiumicino Airport' to 'Roma Trastevere', and the date of travel 5/9/2012, it says no solution found... i tried several times, it still gives me the same error message. so i changed the date to march, then the time table shows up, but under the price column, it says 'NA'... i am not able to purchase the ticket at all... -
looking forward to hearing from you! thank you very much for your help! loretta

This is getting confusing since Loretta hijacked a thread with a question going in the opposite directions with different needs. Having a hard time remembering who is going where. We have made that run about five times. This is for Loretta - You would be smarter to delete your response and repost it as separate, new question. That way you are notified when responses are posted instead of the OP being notified of responses to your question. I know - it gets complicated. First, if the taxi fare is about $60, then take the taxi, but that sounds low by half. You are short on time and with four people you are close to break even with the train - total train cost is going to be in the range of 50 to 60E depending on train options. Using the train you are looking at least two hours and maybe three depending on wait time, etc. If you are going to use the train, option 1 is your best bet and follow previous instructions. The train change in Termini is more time consuming and complicated. Trastevere is easier - just a change of platform. And cheaper. The Leonard Express fare is 14E, the 11E was the fare a few years ago. Buy all your tickets at the ticket office in the airport. These will be open tickets and ABSOLUTELY MUST BE VALIDATED IN THE LITTLE YELLOW BOXES. Be sure you get on the correct train at the airport. You cannot buy tickets in advance because regional train tickets are not sold on line. No point - no reservations, no discount. Just get on and go. But they are also the slowest trains. And that is why you are seeing "No solution" when you plug in the dates. Four people with typical cruise luggage will be a very tight fit in the taxi. Probably have to hold some luggage. Work at reducing your luggage For cruises we always go in two to three days just so that your time line works better. I assume at this point you cannot change your arrival day. What are your return plans?

Now for Shelley - When the cruise ships dock, Civit... is flooded especially if more than one ship is in port. And everybody is going somewhere. Your cruise ship will bus you to the port entrance. It will be a zoo with dozens of taxi, and hired cars, etc. jamming a very small port entrance. You will have to walk to the train station - about half mile, straight ahead along the beach. The train station will be an even bigger zoo. But if you are smart you will have bought second class, regional train ticket somewhere else in Italy - at the airport on the way in or any ticket office anywhere. Use the yellow box on the wall of the station, track side, to validate the ticket - CRITICAL - check the train board and go to the platform for the next regional train to Rome - Trastevere. At Trastevere change platform and take the next regional train - FM1 - to the airport. With waiting time, etc. plan on a max of three hours.
