My friend and I will be arriving at Civitavecchia at about 6AM on April 10th, and have a flight on British Airways to London leaving at 3:15PM. The cruise line (Princess) offers bus transportation from the cruise terminal to the airport for $96. per person, which I think is outrageous, since it's only 42 miles the train fare is less than $14. But I am concerned about getting from the ship to the train station.
I am hoping that someone here can provide me with information regarding this transfer and how much time it takes.
Thanks in advance!
Every cruise line charges high fares for airport transfer at any port. My eyes water when I look at what they charge in Seattle, for instance. You are paying for convenience.
It isn't clear whether the flight has been booked with Princess, or independently. If booked through the cruise line you will get priority disembarkation to be on their bus to make their flight.
Any private transfer or taxi company will charge the same kind of price, so I don't think it's out of kilter too far.
The thing is you have a one or two stage transfer from ship to rail station (depending on how it is arranged) and then have to change trains in Rome to reach the airport. You can't afford the time to wait for a long distance train to Rome so will be on one of the commuter trains with luggage, and the train may well be busy. It is at least 2 hours from Civitavecchia to the airport, and add an hour from stepping off the ship to stepping onto a train.
Unless you self disembark (take your own luggage off the ship) you will disembark over a 2 to 3 hour period from around 7am to around 10am in an order determined by the ship (either by deck or loyalty status). You don't get to decide when if just catching a train.
Whether it's Rome or Miami (basically any cruise port) I would not have wanted what is a fairly tight connection in my experience. At least it is London, not transatlantic so more choice of later flights, and a lower cost.
All in all in those circumstances I see $96 as a prudent investment. No luggage handling at change points, no possibility of missed connections.
Thanks for your help. The schedule I saw however, showed that the rail trip from Civitaveccio to Fiumicino Airport is a direct train ride, taking about 51 minutes, for a fare cost of $13.75. Had I seen a train schedule that showed a trip into Rome and a transfer to a train from Rome to the airport, I would not have considered it. I am concerned with the time/distance from dockside to the train station at Civitavecchio.
All of the trains that I'm seeing in the morning involve a change, but, still, you have plenty of time. Your question, though, is about getting from the port to the station. I've walked that distance (with luggage and family) when I lived in Rome. We arrived at the port by train and departed by train. It wasn't too bad. I don't recall how long it took--maybe 30 minutes total? Perhaps shorter. It's been a few years.
I would be interested to know which site listed a direct train from Civitavecchia to FCO on your date. All of the Trenitalia trains on April 10 appear to require a change in Rome. Regardless, there is an ongoing long thread on the Cruise Critic Ports of Call forum about getting to the Civitavecchia train station from the ship https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2848357-civitavecchia-port-rome-by-train-your-questions-answered-here/page/29/#comment-69672891 ship.
TLDR? Easiest is to pay the €6 for the shuttle bus direct from your dock to the train station.
You may want to verify your train information. There is no direct train to the airport from Civitavecchia. The airport is served regularly only by two trains, the Leonardo Express, and the Regional FL1. Most all routes suggest one change, some suggest Trastevere Station, others Ostiense using the regional trains, some suggest going all the way to termini and then taking the Leonardo Express, but to me, that seems longer and costs more.
The change at Trastevere would be quick and easy, it is a small station.
Look on Trenitalia.com, your destination station is Fiumicino Aeroporto.
As for getting to the train station from the cruise docks, the station is about a mile away, there are public buses, or lots of cabs hanging around. Assuming you want to be at the airport at noon (3 hours or so early) that gives you 6 hours, say 2 to get off the ship, an hour at most to get to the train station, and a 1 1/2 hour trip, that still gives you an hour and a half buffer, plenty of time. You likely will be at the airport by 10:00 AM or before.
I don't believe there is a direct TRAIN from Civitavecchia port to FCO. Can you describe the website that told you that? Could it be a public bus of some kind? The train with connection at Roma Termini station is around 1:50. I can tell you that it is worth $95 to not walk your luggage to the train station and join 5,000 of your closest personal friends trying to buy tickets and cram onto a train that carries 1,000 people, and only has normal luggage racks.
It is not sensible to take a "6:00 Arrival" itinerary to mean you will walk off the ship at 6:05. Especially if you are in a bargain cabin. Since the price for a private car transfer from Rome to the ship is about 125 Euros, the airport transfer by cruise company bus is not a ripoff. Will you be using the cruise terminal, or descending onto a distant pier? I ask because only some vehicles are allowed onto the piers, which includes proprietary transports of the cruise line. Our Windstar small ship once used a distant pier, reached by a port shuttle bus (shared by more than one ship!) from the security traffic circle at the port's auto entrance.
Although our travel agent in the 1990's was honest about Civitavecchia, it is the "dirty little secret" about cruises to or from Rome! We've been there a few times since.
Even if there was a hypothetical direct train which I don't believe there ever has been (and Trenitalia schedules don't show) 51 minutes would be optimistic. Termini to the airport is 32 minutes, and even the limited stop expresses from Civitavecchia to Termini take 45 minutes, so that sounds a very optimistic timing.
Even when the non stop cruise train with assigned seating ran from Civitavecchia it only operated to Termini.
But at the port, there are half a dozen or so cruise berths, some quite a way away. From the south gate to the railway station is a 1600 yard (basically a one mile) walk, but you have to get to the gate first from the ship. There is a shuttle bus, but is inadequately resourced when every berth is in use. So add say 10 to 15 minutes walk (or wait for the bus), then say 15 minutes at the station to buy your train ticket.
Alternatively there is a shuttle bus direct from each berth to the station, which takes about 15 minutes, but only runs every 20 minutes or so, and has the same resourcing issues.
Thirdly there is a shuttle bus to the cruise bus station at the north end of the city, from which you could walk down to the station.
So there is where an hour ship to train comes from. Of course you may get there faster, but prudent to allow a sensible length of time.
Many thanks to all. I hate to do it, but it seems to me that the most sensible thing to do is to pay the outrageous $96 fare and take the bus provided by Princess cruises. Like most everything else related to cruises and cruise lines, the cost is much more than one would reasonably expect ($5.50 half-liter bottles of water, anyone?). But it is what it is.
Whoa! Wait a minute! I didn't read the ad correctly! It says "Prices start at $96. per person"! It appears that there is no regular bus, but a bunch of various vehicles that customers sign up for, based on the size of their group. For a party of two persons, the charge is $243. per person. I don't know what I'm going to do now. This is beyond belief.
So I see (after doing some digging) that Princess use Amico Limo- https://amicolimo.it/en/
You could try contacting Amico direct, and asking what their price is, as a direct customer. Unfortunately the contact form isn't working, for me, but e-mail them.
There are lots of other such private transfer companies for this journey, maybe not such high end limos, but more mainstream cars which should therefore be cheaper.
But ultimately I think some kind of direct road transfer is what you need. I've had too many delays at sea on cruise lines (and also delays disembarking at port) to be able to suggest a rail transfer as you suggest with integrity.
Delays at sea include storms. medivacs, assisting on SOS call, delayed port pilot etc.
A totally failed gangway at Antwerp and a farago with a road crane to lift the gangway at Honningsvag being just two examples of delays at port.
If the ship docks on time, and you are off the ship good and early, and there are no rail problems on either of the two rail lines, yes the budget option works. But a lot of 'ifs' there.
At Honningsvag the master of the ship was held responsible for ordering the wrong crane, and summarily dismissed at the next port (Tromso), but it didn't help us on the day on Nordkapp excursions.
If you hypothetically missed your flight to London, how much would two new last minute tickets cost- a question, I don't know. But that may influence your choice of transport modes.
Try a company like https://sharedshuttle.it/. This is the type of service we used 10 years ago. According to the website, cost for two will be €80.
*confirm that they can pick you up directly from the ship's dock and not the port entrance. Some services don't have port access.
$96 is not an outrageous fee for being super convenient. Not sure where you are getting your information of 42 miles and train fares less than $14. Check a map. As the crow flies it maybe 42 miles but the crow doesn't carry luggage. Civit... is NW of Rome on the coast (obvious) and the airport is mostly due south of Rome. Public transportation options are through Rome. Unless a recent change, there is no direct connection between Civit and the airport. We have made this transition a number of times. Always about the same --
- Exiting the ship depends on ship protocol. We only carry on and some status so we can just walk off at our time. Your ship could be restrictive as to when you can leave. You may have to go through immigration/pass port control.
- A shuttle bus will take you to the port exit. There will be a mob of taxis and private drivers to take you to the airport or Rome. Most will not take you to the train station because it is five minute ride and they might miss a big fare back to Rome. We walk the mile or so to the train station. It is very obvious.
- At the station we grab the first Regionale train to Rome. Do not even think about purchasing a train ticket at this station. It will be a mob and lines are impossible especially if more than one cruise ship has landed. We purchased an R, Regrionale ticket earlier because it is open seating. ALL other train tickets will come with a seat reservation and a specific train. The R ticket gives you max flexibility. Just get on and go. The Regionale train is about an hour to an hour fifteen.
- Nearing Rome there are a couple of stations that will allow you to change to a local airport train, FL10(?). to the airport. We don't. We just go to Termini.
- At Termini and if time is on our side, we use find a cafe, perhaps a lite breakfast or early lunch, use the restrooms, etc.
Final, find the L Express to the airport - used to be track 25 on the far right side (facing the tracks) but probably changes. Runs every 30 mins and you can buy your ticket prior to boarding.
I would plan on about 4 hrs from leaving the ship to being at the check in line at the airport.
However, 96$ bus ride looks pretty good.
Please consider three things. There may be more than one ship disembarking that same day at the same time. You will probably not be able to leave the ship before 8:00 a.m. at the earliest. Since your flight leaves at 3:15 p.m., you should be at the airport not later than 1:15.
We've taken the train from Civitavecchia to Rome after cruises several times. We would never try to make that connection using the trains. The transport offered by the cruise line or a private car service transfer appears to be the only safe way to go. I really don't mean to rain on your parade, but this might be a time when you just have to pay more than you would like.
Hope you find a solution that eases the pain of ending a cruise on a sour note.

We have used this company to get to the airport from Rome and to the cruise port from Rome. Looks like they do pick ups at the cruise port for 200 euros for 2 people so cheaper than Princess’ price. Look into it and see if they can get you to the airport instead of just Rome. They were super easy to work with when we used them. Very nice and accommodating.
Just talked to the guy who sold me the cruise, and was pleased to learn that there are a number of taxis, limos, and busses that generally are waiting on the pier to take passengers to their destinations. He told me that the total fare to the airport would run anywhere from 50 to 100 Euros. He said that I would probably be at the airport by noon at the latest.
Let's hope he is correct.
...there are a number of taxis, limos, and busses that generally are waiting on the pier...
How many taxis, limos, and busses are going to be available for how many passengers? We've disembarked at Civitavecchia several times, and believe me, it is a mad house.
The best way to be sure you have transportation to get to the plane on time is to reserve in advance. The aforementioned Rome Cabs is a car service we have used a number of times in Rome and we can't speak highly enough about them. If they are not able to handle your reservation, don't hesitate to ask them to suggest another service.
Just food for thought
We've used Tiber Limo multiple times to to the CIvit - FCO transfer, as well as Rome hotels to cruise port; I highly recommend them! You can get a quote from their website. If possible, try to get others to join you for a cheaper rate. They meet you right at the ship. We're using again for 6 of us and they quoted 220. EUR.
